Scholastic Book Fairs really are a genius idea, giving kids a chance to interrupt their schooling and get hooked on consumerism while telling teachers/parents it's in the name of reading.
Bro I'm sorry but those captain underpants books are the second most enjoyable part of my childhood and it's because of those book fairs and you're just sitting on your smelly sweaty fat ass downing cheese puffs thinking you're real bright for suggesting kids get more work and less time off like a miserable fat frick who should have a heart attack and die.
>Book Fair BAD!
This anon was that one kid who either got in trouble because he ordered too much at the book fair and got yelled at, or was the kid who bought the museum gift-shop tier toys that broke two day after you open them and has been salty ever since.
the captain underpants series and similar poperties do not take themselves seriously and are unapologetically full of lowbrow stupid humor, that's what makes it so good
plus what this anon said, it's sales are propped up by literally every single american middleschooler.
are there any japanese kids comics that have the same tone as captain underpants? Self parodying, and self aware lowbrow humor?
the japs and japanese kids might take themselves too seriously to publish something like that or have it be popular with the youth.

Tons . Shonen Jump specifically has at least one gag manga that's published at the end of the book that's nothing but shitposting. Coro Coro comics is pretty much THE kids manga magazine, and its basically full of gag versions of popular characters. LIke, I know that the Mario-kun manga has several issues where the joke is just "Mario's dick is out for some reason" or the Pokemon comic where the entire premise is that Clefairy is a dumb ass and Pikachu is legitimately mentally moronic, so they have to bluff their way through battles.
Superior distribution.
They literally drive to ther target audience and set up shop.

You will buy ze graphic novels
Parents get blackmailed into giving their kids money for it
I would rather take my (imaginary) kid to a bookstore
Frick you. I cherish my captain underpants days.
yes, how terrible, getting kids addicted to...buying books and reading them

Captain underpants inspired me to make my own comics as a kid and I still draw comics in my 30s.
Bookfairs were one of the few things in school that didn't feel like prison.
>TFW you were homeschooled and didn't get to enjoy the delight of a book fair

Anon, it's okay. It's not your fault you never had money for the book fair. Let it out, anon. You're going to be okay.
>Went to mostly black school
>Book fair was mostly white.
scholastic, I kneel
Wait'll Anon hears about DEAR time.
Commies really do hate literacy more than anything lmao
>Book fair as a kid
>Find this book
>Get a crash course in DCU history

Reading is consuming books.

every "big" battle shonen manga is primarily targeted at middle-school aged kids
They're also very self aware and lowbrow. Dragon Ball and 80s stuff especially.

>DON'T GET STRUNG OUT BY THE WAY THAT I LOOK
It’s also in every Walmart, Costco, supermarket and pharmacy.
It’s also probably the last comic drawn with a Hunt 102.
Well of course, comics are for children after all.
It makes sense that this would be the most popular comic in America.
Parents probably think manga is too violent/risqué
Dogged determination
Book fairs are a scam
dogman is the best comic and it's better than inferior superhero comics
>are there any japanese kids comics that have the same tone as captain underpants?
Me & Roboco
book fairs are a wonderful thing
dogman fandom is a thing
