Autizmo/capeshit expectation. Ghosts don't need to have origin stories dumbass, it's implied that their souls remain stuck in there after violent deaths until they get their revenge
When he sits outside the basement waiting to beat the kids it's in the same house the brother sleeps in.
The house across the street is empty and was only used for storing the bodies.

I didn't. It's a good movie. Nitpicking or projecting any type of testy expectation on it isn't the movie's fault.
The movie has nice redemption overtones as well and the retro atmosphere was heartfelt. It does have sparse woke details (le ebil father) but at the end it all ties together.
>It does have sparse woke details (le ebil father)
the story is obviously about the kid growing up and standing up to adults and abusers, whats woke about having a character have an abusive alcoholic father at home?
Inherently nothing wrong with it-- it's rather the fact that woke bullshit tries to make adult men evil too often. The spanking scene went on for centuries.
Both it's an overall movie that is ultimately fair to most characters. And Ethan Hawke's acting as the villain is superb and literally worth an Oscar nomination.

Way too many missing important information pieces like what is the mask, where is it from, why does he need it, why is he killing kids, why are the town police so moronic, why are there ghosts, why doesn’t he believe in them, why even keep your idiot brother nearby, why is the girl psychic, details of moms death, did grabber get trapped in the phone, where is the phone now, house/room history. Is this what the zoomer brain is like? Is this why we'd have Jason Part 24: The Mask, explaining that Ooma Goobglag on the planet Zebulon created the original hockey mask? And then we can have a spinoff show about Goobglag because we have to find out how he became a hockey mask maker, and his tragic backstory, and who made the materials that were part of the mask? Perhaps an evil spirit has a mine of child murder victims that extracted evil plastic from plastic mountains?
nice longwinded reddit joke. I like how every time a screenwriter fails to embellish any of the more interesting details in his story, you redditors can just say 'heh, it's spookier NOT knowing! It does, just like Signs, another great movie, did. Here's what you missed: those apparently unrelated aspects coalescing into the main character's final win and freedom are a metaphor for faith.
So its the Whoopi Goldeberg machine of movies? If i wanted to see a bunch of objects come together to do something simple I would watch the Ok. Go. Music video.
Yo so like, ive been working for 20 years as a magician to save up for TWO HOUSES and have a sick soundproof basement and an extra basement with a freezer with no external connection BUT LISTEN
Im gonna start grabbing kids and wait for them to be naughty and then i kill them in one house then bury them in another LOL so random I know
Also theres a phone there that im scared of. I dont know why i put it there or why i havent taken it out! lol im so crazy?!
He has a point. The "questions" being raised by those on this thread who disliked the movie are massively moronic because they're either irrelevant or clearly answered during the movie, even if subtly.
The "naughty boy" scenario was the Grabber's deranged sexual game (something not unheard of with real-life serial killers)
Any expectation that a movie will be burdened by exposition in order to assuage childish types stuck in the "why" phase is unrealistic. Movies are not your mommies.
The "Grabber". What a dumbass homosexual name to land on for a serial killer. It's like the cherry on top for this shitty movie. The grabber.... jfc...
>i need these boys to be naughty before I beat them! >oh you fully escaped and ran away, no thats cool just hang out in the basement >oh you like fricked up the window grate and did all this other shit a cursory examination would reveal? no big deal you arent a naughty boy yet! Just be self-aware of the autistic nature of some "questions" that trigger you
>>oh you fully escaped and ran away, no thats cool just hang out in the basement
He called the main character "naughty boy" before knocking him out cold. Make of that what you will >>oh you like fricked up the window grate and did all this other shit a cursory examination would reveal? no big deal you arent a naughty boy yet!
Why would he make a "cursory examination"? He's not a realtor and had already succesfully held 5 other victims in the same place
Your assumption that you're raising relevant questions is both tone-deaf and low IQ
It was an analogy for Christianity. (spoilers abound)
The Grabber represents Satan, he grabs us and holds us under. We have all the necessary tools to escape from his clutches but the only way to do that is if we have faith. In this film faith is represented by The Black Phone (and also literally by Jesus in the form of Finn's sister praying for answers.)
Even though it seems like everything is for naught and you have no idea why God isn't answering your prayers, He IS, you just are too shortsighted to see the pieces he's laying down that will come in use later. This happens when Finn breaks into the steak freezer and can't get out, it feels like everything he's been doing has made no progress. But it actually has. He wasn't supposed to escape via the freezer, the freezer was there so he could grab a steak at the end and save Max's body from the Grabber's dog. Responsibility and Respect for the dead.
At the end when Finn finally escapes his sister realizes he wasn't even in the house she thought he was, he was in the one across the street. The ONLY way he could've gotten out of his torment was through The Black Phone. Just like how Jesus is the only way through life and into heaven.
There's also a message about violence and anger being necessary against violence. This is EXTREMELY rare to find in modern hollywood, where the protagonist is stripped of all his notions of "righteous" anger in favor of apathy and loss of individualism. It's meant to discourage you. Look at The Batman, The Northman, Under The Silver Lake, A Monster Calls, etc. It's all told in the name of moderation, but it really just exists to weaken you and siphon your Will and Energy out of you.
This is not the case in this film, which was written and directed by a known Christian man (Scott Derrickson).
The message of this film is that there are evil, wicked people out there who want to hurt you and your family and friends. They're bullies, but fully grown and more malicious.
Excellent write-up anon, none of that had occurred to me
Also the aspect of redemption in the movie is pervasive, there's always something good that can be done despite individual shortcomings

Yes. It also shows characters that are flawed but also tried to do good, even if from the afterlife. And the dog also has clear parallels to Cerberus, which is a Greek mythology figure but also keeps guard at the entrance of hell. The Grabber also kills his brother like Cain did

the cons of the movie (and ignoring all the nitpicking), however are:
1. the entire plot with the girl was pointless. I get the symbolism but it doesn't change the fact that it was a huge waste of the audience's time that could have been done better while also having psychic nonsense that added nothing.
2. the killer was never shown to do anything bad beyond kidnap the kid. we're told he's so evil and killed all these kids, and yet the entire movie feels like filler where the killer can't do anything beyond sit on a chair and wait. really takes a lot of the wind out of the story.
Kid also literally throws a 90mph breaking ball at the beginning of the movie. And the outfielder isn't even looking at the homerun ball as it goes over the fence. I still remember thinking to myself "wow, not a good start". I should have saved myself the time and turned it off then
Just re-watched the scene. The sound of the ball coming off the metal bat is a sound bite of a ball coming off a wooden bat. Lmao, lazy as frick editing. Need I remind you they had to CGI the kid throwing and hitting a baseball? Hahaha fricking pathetic. Nobody likes your homosexual movie, homosexual. And you're being a massive little b***h for being so assblasted about it
It makes sense within the story, both metaphorically (he was always looking upwards, playing with rockets etc) as well as his arm being "mint", which was essential in the end
Both foreshadow the plot beautifully
My takeaways >Gays abduct boys to rape and murder them >God is real and if you pray to him, he will give you visions that will help you kill homosexuals
didn't hate it, but i enjoyed it while watching it more than i did remembering it after, it's a movie that has great ideas but feels like it's lacking, that's exactly how i felt about Sinister too
It's from Joe Hill's 2004 1st book and clearly highly indebted to his dad's best aspects as a horror writer. Apparently Hill has already thought of an idea for another Black Phone movie which Derrickson liked a lot.
because I kept waiting for something interesting to happen and it never did. The Grabber is the shittiest villain ever, he could have been fun but wasn't because nothing happens to him or with him.
the brother was a massive moron for never looking downstairs ever. other than that i liked it.
i never look downstairs ever as well
he was a drug addict and low IQ, he was probably also afraid of his brother
He was just couch surfing there. I wouldn't explore every corner of someone's house if they gave me a place to crash.
It's a horror movie. It's a universal law that you check out every corner of your house .
Which he (a drug addict who was crashing at his brother's house) eventually did
I don't understand how the brother just never ever woke up in the middle of the night and saw his brother sitting shirtless in a creepy mask
Because the brother was in the other house across the street
>no explanation for why the frick the ghosts are there
Autizmo/capeshit expectation. Ghosts don't need to have origin stories dumbass, it's implied that their souls remain stuck in there after violent deaths until they get their revenge

Scott Derrickson you're a stupid gay and you will never get a job in Hollywood again.

Keeps the pain at bay

I really liked it. I didn’t find it remotely scary, but it was a good story well-told.

didn't hate it, but i enjoyed it while watching it more than i did remembering it after, it's a movie that has great ideas but feels like it's lacking, that's exactly how i felt about Sinister too
critics and general Audiences love this movie,
Very well received by a lot of people
So of course, Cinemaphile has to hate it and trash it out of contrarian principle
It's just a handful of rambunctious teenagers either raising pointless issues or asking obvious questions.
We know it’s you Scott, you don’t have try so hard. People don’t care about Christianity and just wanted to be scared at a horror movie.
Sure, it's essential for a director to spend the night on Cinemaphile talking about his movie
Resident evil and the boys literally keep mentioning Cinemaphile

It's from Joe Hill's 2004 1st book and clearly highly indebted to his dad's best aspects as a horror writer. Apparently Hill has already thought of an idea for another Black Phone movie which Derrickson liked a lot.
saw it yesterday, it was ok i guess, pretty predictable
because I kept waiting for something interesting to happen and it never did. The Grabber is the shittiest villain ever, he could have been fun but wasn't because nothing happens to him or with him.
I hecking love blumhouse orange piss filtered modern slow burner horror with cursing kids that can't act
>make shitty horror movie
>DUDE IT WAS AN ALLEGORY FOR _*THING*_
>i am very smart 🙂
Why are a24 trannies seething at this fun kino? Not enough interracial sex or white people bashing for you?
Didn't hate it, didn't love it. It was just alright.
