Between this, Jetsons movie, Yo Yogi live-action Flinstones and Scooby Doo Arabian Nights, Hanna-Barbera went full moron in the 90s. No wonder WB acquired the company.
The Flintstones movie was actually faithful to the show and John Goodman was a top tier choice.

Goodman didn't want to do Flintstones in the first place. Spielberg cast him in front of a bunch of execs and he knew saying 'no' to Steve in front of them would look bad.
