      >4 seasons
It had three seasons. Which were half the length of BTAS seasons. And of which had literally 1/10 of their episodes being Batman crossovers.

        Anonymous

        >54 episodes
        >failure

It had four seasons, it's just that the last one was just three episodes long. Batman was made back when doing a 65 episode first season to run every weekday afternoon was normal, and the drawback of that approach was inconsistent animation, the best studios can't do them all. Season three of Superman was the weakest because the crew was stretching themselves thin doing Superman, Batman, and Batman Beyond at the same time, so the first two ended so they could focus fully on the last one which WB particularly liked because more younger kids watched it.

          Anonymous

Three episodes isn't a real season. It's not even movie length (of which DCAU Batman had 3 and Superman had 0).

Superman basically had one season. Seasons two and three were then merged into a package program with more Batman. And because even that wasn't enough, about 1/5 of those two seasons were Batman crossovers (six episodes). A lot of others were backdoor pilots for Justice League. Arguably by season 2 it's already proto-JL instead of a Superman show. On top of the six Batman episodes we had a Green Lantern episode, a Legion episode (which you can at least semi-excuse if you consider them Superman characters), an Aquaman episode, a Flash episode, and a Dr. Fate episode.

Then because even that humiliation wasn't enough it got canceled outright for a Batman spin-off. Didn't even get a single movie (again, to Batman's 3) to wrap up the cliffhanger arc.

            Anonymous

If it was truly a failure they would have canceled it after the first. Kids WB wasn't shy about canceling Road Rovers which debuted on the same day or Waynehead which debuted a month later.

you don't think retooling it into Justice League Limited after one season was a sign it wasn't doing well? Especially when that was a short season to begin with.

It wasn't a massive hit like Batman, but things that aren't massive hits can still be successful. And pairing it with Batman did boost ratings.

                >you don't think retooling it into Justice League Limited after one season was a sign it wasn't doing well?

no. I figured they just wanted to make justice league and saw no point in also having a super man show since both take place in metropolis a lot.

Also, superman is easier to write as part of a team than stand alone.

Superman the Animated Series was born into a situation where it could never really succeed no matter how much it tried. My Adventures with Superman was born into a situation where really, it couldn't fail as along as it made it a basic Superman story. Timm was dealing with the consequences of the high expectations from Batman the Animated Series, and he himself was never terribly good at content outside of pulp detective material. In hindsight, he even admitted that he should have leaned harder into sci-fi action adventure rather than making a halfway compromise between the fleischer cartoons and BTAS. The MAWS "anime" may have terrible animation, and show runners who don't have the talent to actually use those anime references well, but they're also coming off of a decade of mediocre Superman films made by people who think they're doing Miracleman, DC animated films no one watches, and the dominance of the Evil Superman concept played to death. In that environment, any superman story that was just the basic good neighbor guy Superman was going to succeed; it just happened to also appeal to thirsty fujos who realized probably for the first time in their lives, that yes, Superman is a pretty awesome dude, and no, he's not a stand in for their father figure, who they hate so much. So an additional demographic of new fans along with long-suffering old fans desperate for even a hint of the traditional Superman made for a pretty strong showing for the new show.

This isn't the first time this happened. In JL, he said they wanted John Stewart because they were fans of his stories only to never adapt any of those stories. Then he later admitted it was done because they needed a black guy on the team.

Bruce Timm doesn't give about what goes on unless his beloved Batman is involved.

I wonder what the logic is behind it. Even the new cartoon seems pretty basic.
They couldn't even have Silver Banshee has have a mystical origin.
I like both series but they both feel like stuff you'd do in a live action series for budget reasons (or because adults watch it wouldn't want it to get too wild)
But cartoons for kids could use some of Superman's far out story ideas but they tend to avoid it
