Trying to minimize their reliance on the Japanese industry and try and rope in the demographics which will entertain any slop as long as it signals the progressive tribes. Vrilwytblik says it's more throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. It obviously has a rather lackluster budget on all levels so they were probably hoping that it'd churn out something kitschy yet marketable.

That's the same dumb argument they always make "Hurr just watch porn." It's stupid and you're being bad faith. Regurgitating that same lefty canned argument.

Their as to why it's anime breasts are bad is nonsensical and based on a moronic ideology in the first place. There's no good reason for the change and so it should be opposed on those grounds in the first place. But it also objectively makes the products that I enjoy worse, we see the results of this where we constantly get ugly and unsightly characters like starfield or how hideous He Man was. I don't want to watch porn or masterbate to anime just because I want attractive or appealing characters. It's not even that I necessarily want everything to hyper sexualized I just don't want these ugly character designs in my media.

Why should I care? It's the shit that I enjoy that I don't want them ruining. It's obvious why people care that's a dumb thing to say. It's based on a dumb ideology as well. The whole porn argument is always dumb because sometimes it's also implying that the only things allowed to be not ugly is porn. Maybe I want decent looking characters in something with an actual story.

Don't be a dumbfrick anon. Leftist morons AND rightist morons want to ban anime breasts. The rightist morons are not relevant in this specific case. And the opening promo spent more time on gender politics than it did on characters and setting.

        >I am so grateful that I don't care about the shitty politics...
So, when you see a promo that's 75 percent shitty politics, what's your first reaction to the show? If it's going after the people who accurately describe it as politics, there's no hope for you.

          Anonymous

          >The rightist morons are not relevant in this specific case
I mean, in this specific case they are pretty relevant to failure of the show? Because immediately following that initial trailer that talked more about the writers room that the show itself, HGS became a massive FOTM topic within the rightist moron spheres online - bringing in not only the anime/cartoon subsets but also a lot of people who don't watch anything and just used it as something to point at and be upset about. And that led to a sort of feedback loop where the very reactionary rightist conversation eclipsed pretty much all other possible discussion of the show itself.
And because of that, there were direct impacts on how the show was and still is perceived, with it being shot completely out of the water before the show even aired (after it was delayed and released with almost no fanfare as a direct result of that rightist attention), and almost any conversation of it being completely dominated by said rightest talking points. This thread as an excellent example.

At the time, Crunchyroll was trying to legitimize themselves as a full blown animation network, not just a streaming platform. Like everyone in earth, they knew that fan subs will always reign supreme in the anime industry so they wanted to gain traction by producing stuff in-house.

Their big purchase was the Tower of God adaptation, but they wanted a few smaller stuff as well. I believe High Guardian Spice was intended to show investors that they also had western stuff in the portfolio as a means of getting them on board to later allow for things similar to Dragon Prince to be produced by them.

High Guardian Spice on paper was a pretty good project and Rey is a very talented artist, even if a lot of the character designs are more inspired by other things than others. The biggest problems came from just how badly managed it was.

If the announcement trailer was a sizzle real explaining then project instead of the most unlikeable group of people sitting at a table talking down to the audience, it would have played better, and I’d the writing could decide if it was going to be childish or serious it would have been less jarring.

This was just an unfortunate casualty that could have worked and been reasonably popular with better management. So my honest belief was that it was always meant to be a throwaway

The branding was simple “we are funding our own originals from the international scene with anime inspirations for appeal to a broader audience and diversify our offerings to have more than what you can get for free from fan subs.”
TokyoPop America and Yen Press both sold themselves on the idea that country didn’t matter. If your project for the spirit and values of anime, it was good enough to be published with them.
The problem with those two was that it was a scam with shit contracts.
The problem with Crunchyroll is that they didn’t know how to properly manage productions and decided to focus solely on making Tower of God a success, even though the built in mega fandom ensured it would be

Which directly conflicts with their previous branding.

Tokyopop america and Yen press had the relative advantage that their offerings were ala carte. Also, you should check the popularity of those offerings from both brands with CR's customer base. I bet they had a terrible rep. THAT's a key problem.

Not what I’m saying at all. Crunchyroll as a company never claimed it was going to produce anime of its own. But it did need to diversify to stay relevant. It making its own animated projects didn’t “take money away from anime” or “take money promises to go to anime”
And I believe the core audience would have been more receptive to their projects had they introduced them better.

It doesn't matter now since Crunchyroll is basically FUNimation now since Sony owns both and change FUNi name to Crunchyroll. Sony owns nearly half the anime in the US....Jesus...

Driving through comicet with an itachari full of money, throwing it at skilled, but relatively unknown doujin makers to give them a shot.

After it came out, for a short while everyone seemed insistent that this show was worse than Hitler. Then people quieted down and somehow it even seemed to get genuine enjoyers.

The problem from day one was the production and funding. And as always, the opinion of the show is made by the viewers. I vaguely recall people wanting to fill the blond fat one with sperm from day one.

if they could have their own show and sell tons of its merchandise, that would be huge for their business so there was an attempt. nothing weird about that.
you sound like you want to think it failed because weebs would just hate it but no, it was more of a skill issue. look at how some chinese companies make tons of money by copying weeb shit even in the west.

                Not really.
America alone is no longer a big enough market to sustain an industry, if it was then the American animation and comic industries wouldn't be in the states they are now, since they only appeal to Americans and no one else (and only a subset of Americans at that).

Sure it's a skill issue, but a big chunk of that skill issue is the emphasis and priorites of the production, and the experience. They could have picked a Tradd Moore or Fred Perry, or Adam Warren. They could have picked people who didn';t hate their existing fanbase.

People were mad because Crunchyroll claimed their sub fees would go towards commissioning their own anime and other Asian animation. People who naturally expected this were mad when HGS was revealed, not only because it was American but because the reveal trailer was essentially lecturing them and the show itself looked to be putting more effort into pursuing the Steven Universe audience than anything anime-like.

Crunchyroll is a company well known for their moronation on a mass scale. Why just recently they decided to absorb RightStuf, a successful anime/manga store they already owned.

Literally all they had to do was let it operate independently and they would have continued to made gangbusters from the excellent deals and early shipping. But lol nope we need to satiate our ego, can't have something under us without searing our name into it.

This show is just blantly shit, for Weebs that subscribed to Crunchyroll its shitty western cartoon and not a Anime thats actually good(also doesint help that they subscribed cause Crunchyroll promised that the money would go to support the artists that make the anime, not make a whole new and different show) and for anyone who wasint a weeb, ie people who mostly watch Western cartoons or a casual anime watcher, it was just fricking dog shit.

      >Crunchyroll promised that the money would go to support the artists that make the anime, not make a whole new and different show

This is not true at all. I feel like this argument must have come from some moronic youtuber and people started running with it. Crunchyroll said they directly pay studios with some of their profits. They do, it’s called licensing the anime directly from them. Crunchyroll never said they would exclusively fund only Japanese productions, and no one subbed to Crunchyroll exclusively because they believed it would lead to more anime.
It’s also not like the existence of HGS meant an anime didn’t get made. Crunchyroll wasn’t looking to fund a full scale anime, they were funding an assortment of shows to start their production side. Netflix also didn’t start with funding the anime then currently do. Hell, look at adult swim. It took them almost 20 years to start funding anime directly despite it being a major draw for their network.
The whole “they took money meant for anime and made a cartoon” was a bullshit argument that never had any basis in reality

        Anonymous

A better example is when CARTOON network started to put live action shows on. The other examples never had the expectation of the fanbase. This is independent of any youtuber claims.

Finally, somebody itt who isn't a complete moron

LOL. Anon's right to not let politics get in the way of his enjoyment, but in this case, the political frickheads made the show in the first place.
