There’s no actual mystery though. It’s completely obvious what’s happening and who’s behind it from miles away, people just weren’t looking.
if you're told whats being done from the start, sure.
This was never a mystery story at any point in time, the book is a non fiction historical account of what happened.

That's exactly what happened. DiCaprio wanted to play the love interest, so the script was completely re-written to accommodate him when it was suppose to focus on the FBI agent investigating.

You can trace back Leo's character in this film to his acting in Wolf of Wall street (young Jordan Belfort) and when he is with his wife he plays it like he's William Costigan

It's interesting because his character would normally be played by a random tv soap actor in their first "big break" that most people forget about. But they gave the role more depth and focus than normal and it makes the film really interesting
