I never opened my phone during the movie. I dont need everything to explicit, I can understand everything to do with Iris, as an example, but the stuff with the secret service and the political candidate never get brought up again

How did you not understand the movie? He wanted to be seen as a hero like back when he was in the war, but after he came back veterans were just discarded.
He was going to assassinate the politician because he viewed him as a bad guy. When that failed he went for the saving Iris angle of becoming a hero.

NTA but it was never about being seen as a hero for Travis imo.

I think it's made very clear that's all it was about to him
He didn't want to do good deeds, he wanted to be a famous hero

              >I think it's made very clear that's all it was about to him
Doesn't mean he wants to be a hero. Travis himself says, "I got some bad ideas in my head." He knows the things he's considering aren't consider noble, honourable or heroic. But he's a man who feels pushed aside and alienated with no place in society. He wants to lash out and be heard, even if he becomes a villain. The irony is that by lashing out and unleashing his anger against one group of people he becomes a hero but had his original plan not been foiled he would've been a villain.

I think you need to have asperger's/generic social moron syndrome to understand it
It's the same as Elliot Rodger giving up on shooting up the sorority house because the door was locked. He obviously could have just shot his way in or broken down the door but for people in that mental state even minor inconveniences can have a serious effect on their ability to carry out their plans
On a much less harmful level, a lot of people like that will completely derail their whole day's schedule because one tiny thing didn't go as planned because the anxiety from it triggers their assburgers

              Anonymous

Elliot didn't have the strength to break down a door even if he tried. He was weak.

Not that I want him to succeed but why not knock on the door and pretend you're a pizza man? Or just wait until someone opens the door? He waited all day for his roommates to stab them, why couldn't he wait in the bushes for someone to leave the house or approach then open the door?

Well, buy one. Though he doesn't even need them all he needs is someone to open the door and unless they have a security camera they'll open the door to a pizza. If they do then don't bother with it and just say you're there for Stacy, you were supposed to call but lost her number.

    >has a good stable job he works hard at
    >isn't corrupt

Somethin somethin, he was a ticking time bomb who wanted to kill a politician because the woman who stood him up worked for that campaign.
I guess they argue he's just violent and wanted any opportunity to act on it, and saw an opportunity to do so under the guise of altruistic motives. But killing a few random scumbags in one massive city doesn't change the world.

Because the lonely young, white man is society's designated maltreatable person. You have carte blanche to insult, berate or even harm him at no cost to yourself and certainly no repercussions. He expresses anti-oversocialization thoughts and is solitary and away from the hive mind so he develops wrongthink. He's everything the powers that be don't want people to be. He didn't do a single wrong moral thing in the movie.

He didn't have any justifiable reason to kill them. The girl didn't want his help, and as the letter at the end shows, she had parents to go back to the entire time, but chose to be exactly where she was. It's left unexplained why that was.

There was no second time but that scene was there to establish that if she actually wanted to leave, she wouldn't be allowed. Her meeting with Travis was probably okay-ed by Sport.

Right, and the way Keitel acted was definitely like someone that would just let her go.
The movie makes it obvious that she has deluded herself into believing she actually wants this because that's what Keitel wants her to think, because she's just a child and children are easily influenced

      >guy kills a buncha dudes and doesnt go to prison
He was shot by them. The only witness is Iris who didn't see everything and is unlikely to say anything incriminating about Travis. The DA could pursue a murder charge but there's not a great deal of evidence and they'd be putting the guy who almost died saving a child from a bunch of pedophile pimps on trial. Not a lot to win from that taking that to trial even in the event a jury opts to find guilty. Why waste taxpayer money?
