If you have to freeze frame to b***h about something then it's not ruined.

george has always been stupid. the prequels only proved it.

George is an actual genius and has forgotten more about movies and filmmaking than you will ever know. Watch any interview with him instead of out of context clips and you will see. His only sin is that he wanted to do something original with the prequels instead of what his army of midwitt manchildren wanted to do. He couldn't read their minds or bring back their childhood so they will constantly b***h about everything in bad faith. I really dislike you

        >His only sin is that he wanted to do something original with the prequels
The prequels are filled with unoriginal stuff that isn't just unoriginal but don't even make sense if you think about it for more than two fricking seconds. Shit like Kenobis robes now being the Jedi uniform is just one example. Lucas sin is not having someone looking over his shoulder and pointing out when he was doing something stupid that made no sense and also being talked into directing the films himself by Spielberg.

There's more originality in one prequel than an entire decade of Disney slop, I mean "content". The realization should slowly sink in that there will never be a new original era of Star Wars with it's own original designs precisely because George is gone. He was the main creative driving force.

          >Shit like Kenobis robes now being the Jedi uniform is just one example.

This is not an argument. There are thousands of original costumes in the prequels, if they wanted a new Jedi robe they could have come up with one. This is your own personal nitpick that doesn't prove anything about the originality of the movies.

If Lucas had any level of originality to him his entire career wouldn't be about making nostalgia bait shit. Fricking prequels are still just more fricking Star Wars. He had infinite amounts of money and the best production crew on the planet and just went "Actually I don't want to do anything too new" which is the same thing he's done his entire career.

The prequels tell an entirely different story with its own set of morals from the OT. Movies are about telling stories, arent they? You seem very hung up on its surface elements, and since youre already moving goalposts of your original argument id say you are realizing how stupid you are

If youre stuck on surface elements like kenobis robes than youre too stupid to even communicate with. The prequels have a deep subtext about the cycles of history. Its really no accident that the prequel introduces the idea of midi chlorians in a scientific light, this is the jedi in the era of civilization. Its devoid of religion and that is the point.

So? you think cycles of histopry is an original or profound concept? History repeating itself on some level is something just about every culture that has ever existed has pondered. Its as generic as the hero's journey.

The city had a controlled environment that meant residents did not have to worry about the weather. Popular tourist activities included gambling, hiring a cloud car for sightseeing the city and occasionally touring the local mining operations. The high-end accommodations were exclusive, with luxury resorts often charging as much as 5,000 Imperial credits a night. The Ivax Syndicate also maintained gaming houses on the station.

No because the dock when Han arrives is outside and they act like normal. Plus when Luke escapes Vader he's hanging on for dear life call for Leia but nothing indicates the air is toxic to him.
Futher strengthened by when Han & Leia are checking out the creatures in the "asteroid". They wear masks because they know they can't breathe the air, but it doesn't cover their eyes & ears so they would've known the asteroid part of a vacuum,

On some very general level yes but the digital CGI look clashes horribly with the rest of the sequence. Had the entire movie been made in the late 90s and that had been the original scene I don't think anyone would've minded it since it wouldn't have stuck out as much since everything would look more or less the same. As it is its like looking at Casablanca and completely out of nowhere they've replaced a scene with a reshot one in color.

The prequels and constant special editions of the originals were George Lucas with no buffers. No one to say "No George, that's stupid."
No editor wife to run idea past and refine them with.

George was right to go back and fix it

Yes, much like Scott was right to fix a bunch of stuff in Blade Runner. Difference is that Scott wasn't a moron and made the unfinished workprint, the theactrical cut and the director's cut available

My first inclining that George Lucas was not the man I thought he was when ESB SE came out in February 1997. George adds a scream to Luke when he falls off into the abyss. WHY? Vader's line "Bring My Shuttle" is changed to "Alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival". WHY!?!?! May 1999 proved to me beyond a shadow of a doubt that George Lucas was a hack.

yep. boomers (the actual boomers) figured out in the 90s to early 2000s that george lucas was a complete fraud carried by other creatives into a position he never deserved. they figured this out by having the original trilogy on VHS so they could compare it and george couldn't memoryhole shit like greedo having NEVER SHOT, or the original weird looking emperor. boomers made sure I started with the originals so I remember the weirdly feminine looking original emperor and well paced editing that isn't derailed by big CGI animals or cars added in the foreground. the colors were also so much nicer.

Haven't they figured that out with the Star Wars Holiday Special already?
My parents also used to show me the VHS versions (recorded from German TV) which at least didn't have the CGI shit but I think those versions weren't 1:1 theatrical either.

TV versions are always cut to shit, both in terms of actual scenes missing entirely (to retain something like a 2 hour, 2:30 max run-time WITH ADS) and in terms of cropping all frames to fit the old 4:3 standard.
the earliest VHS releases were close or identical to theatrical I think. also they had black bars but I doubt they were full width. probably for the best on a 4:3 TV.

Yeah I thought so, at least there wasn't any CGI shit in them. Regarding the length I do think they were full runtime, probably some late night screenings.

            >Haven't they figured that out with the Star Wars Holiday Special already?
No because that was very clearly a made for TV cash grab and what followed it was one of the best sequels ever made which solidified Star Wars as a permanent fixture of pop culture. Like if someone made a Matrix christmas special in 2000 and it turned out shit nobody would've really cared.

            I take your point

He didn't. I grew up with the edited versions and when I went back and watched the original I couldn't believe how bad some of the scenes (like your pic) were.

He made them how he would have if the tech had existed at the time. They are the improved and true versions according to his vision.

    A New Hope is fine.
Empire Strikes Back is easily the most kino of them all.
Return of the Jedi is okay.
Clone Wars TV series was surprisingly good for the most part, mainly due to consistent character growth and it seemed more adult oriented than a lot of other SW stuff.

Everything else George made can suck a dick of varying degrees.
I don't find Phantom Menace quite as offensive as other people, probably just because they didn't have access to quite as much 3D crap.
But Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith are hands down the worst movies, due to extremely fricked up CGI that looked very dated even at the time.

The Special Editions are his worst sin by far. Not content to ruin Star Wars for future generations, he had to go back and ruin it in the past as well. Absolute madness. Perhaps America's worst mainstream filmmaker

The changes in Star Wars (1) alone are fricking moronic. The name change alone is insidious, it's called Star Wars, not Episode IV - A New Hope. This is so confusing to new comers and it is unfathomable that he was just allowed to do that decades after release.

The CGI dinosaurs obscuring the view are such a stupid and detracting addition. This is so dumb and actually indefensible.

Then the fricking awkward and jerky looking scene with Han Magically dodging a bullet like a Jedi on crack, all to completely change his character introduction from actual scoundrel to inoffensive "good guy" with an attitude.

And then the moronic reintroduction of the Jabba scene, complete with the tail stepping "gag". This is prequels level 50s Diner scene bad, this is what George wanted and why he created JarJar.

Frick you George and frick you George defenders. The man is an imbecile. He ruined his fricking movies and refuses to properly release the original versions. Every time somebody young watches the first Star Wars movie, they're gonna end up watching the crappy version unless they have a sperg friend who makes them watch the 4k77 version.

It is so sad and infuriating.

You can't even count the 2011 blu ray releases as the original movies. I sat down earlier this year to watch the OG trilogy after not watching them for easily 15+ years and was shocked to see some of the greatest effects ever for the 70s. It wasn't till after the movie where i googled and subsequently found out that they added all this CGI and practical effects 40 years after the release and try to sell it off as the original movie.

We like to shit on Star Wars, but at one point in our lives, what was once a living subculture will be dead with the generation that made it live. Like when the fans of Cleopatra and Ben Hur died.
That day, we will miss Star Wars.
