The whole point of the prequel trilogy is that it happened gradually but that nobody noticed until it was too late. The imperial apparatus was already in play leveraged against legitimate corruption in the senate, legitimate arrogance in the Jedi, and legitimate treachery in the Confederacy. Anakin was told to spy for somebody who had fully trusted in him, whereas the Jedi had used him more and more for the convenience of his abilities, whilst pontificating on their supposed danger. A group that had ignored the slavery on Tatooine that created victims like his mother's death to the animals they call Tuskens. In the end, Anakin didn't have to make a giant leap to join the dark side, but just a small jump.
