    Because it made the media take one look at him and think "we could sell this guy as a personality". And THAT brought attention to Marvel Comics. It was pure marketing and probably the single most effective promotion for a comics company ever.

    A bald guy who looked older than he really was isn't marketable to a brand like Marvel. In fact he slowly transitioned to beard and glasses not too long after that 1966 shot in the OP was taken.

        According to some Marvel employees during the late 60s he'd literally try a new rug every week. I think he got those nasty-ass crooked implants mid 70s

    Stan was a showman. He knew how to sell a story! He knew people wouldn't want a plain jane business man. They wanted someone with personality, a brand! Of course, he only came up with that after Jack Kirby's wife told him in bed.
