      Anonymous

No, it was more to try and further deconstruct the pre-war/wartime Japanese culture, which worshipped Hirohito as a living god, had State Shintoism, etc. This picture made Hirohito the Man-God look more man than anything else. The transformation of Japan was top-down but also grassroots. A lot of the change came organically from the Japanese people once they no longer had to live in a police state, so a picture like this further helped consolidate the pyschological change occurring in a people that previously worshipped their Emperor as a deity. It also made MacArthur even more impressive in the eyes of the Japanese, cause of his size, his obvious seniority, etc. Some of the old diehards wanted the picture censored, and the Americans said 'no', which simply made them look even free speech and liberating. The Hirohito photo was a political stunt that MacArthur pulled off spectacularly.

Not really, Japanese were just tiny at the time. They actually gained some height post occupation.

MacArthur was 183 (6'2), Hirohito was 165 (5'5). I'd imagine Hirohito was tall for a Jap back then.

Jisaburo Ozawa was 6'0, but it's all about averages. Average Japanese was shorter than average Murican. Probably a bunch of 5'4ers running up against a bunch of, on average, 5'9ers

              Anonymous

I'm not saying that they were tall on average. The anon I responded to said 5'5 was on the tall end for that period, but the tall end was probably closer to someone like Dazai (which was obviously shorter than a tall American). Ozawa would have been abnormally tall.

Japan isn't 90% mountains so sitting in caves and raping goats until enemy goes away is not an option. Also in 1945 America could starve all japs and no one would care, in Afghanistan soldiers couldn't shoot a single goatfricker without 10 special permissions.

The phonetic parallel script allows for neologisms and foreign loan word adaptation, unlike Mandarin et. al. Then the Buddhist metaphysical strain. They're a combination of Switzerland and UK geographically ... mostly a century head start uninterrupted of "oh god oh frick we need to industrialize or be some round eye's satrap colonial b***h." Because his country was losing. There wasn't a point in fighting when you're just losing every battle and you're out of money and resources.

It was a major risk on his part. The main reason why Japan didn't surrender after Midway because the US would only accept unconditional surrender, and also the US media was saying they were going to hang the emperor. You're a guy who didn't start the war, though you gave the military government a rubber stamp, and if you lose you'll be responsible for ending a 2,000 year dynasty. But the writing was on the wall.

It was the army who wanted to keep fighting and even tried to set up a coup when the emperor was about to surrender.
