It filmed near me in Wicklow, and everyone with a beard wanted to be in it, but then were told you need to speak a dead Norse language all the time. A lot of people just noped the frick out.
did you see a single commercial for it? did you see a poster for it? or any promotion at all? no. ~~*Hollywood*~~ doesn't promote all-white Viking movies.
there was lots of promotion especially in the younger demos. couldn't watch a game trailer or twitch stream for 3-4 months leading up to the film release without seeing an ad for it
too bad that demo doesn't actually go to the movies though
>northmans dad rapes and kills literally every member of northmans dad's wife village and family >she hates him >northman rapes and kills literally every member of anya taylor joy's village and family >she loves him
what did eggman mean by this? and also what was wrong with vikings? why couldn't they build a civilization?
>why did it flop?
Too many white people. Modern audiences flock to progressive media these days & enjoy seeing themselves feel represented on the big screen. Also, the fart scene at the beginning ruined it.
In Njarls saga they mention Slavs, an Irish kidnapped slave (and an Irish dog), and contact with Constantinople - it was about the same time period, introduction of Christianity into Iceland
once more I'm reminded that Cinemaphile is the dumbest board

why did it flop?
because as you see with this thread, movie watchers are generally very stupid. Eggers and Skarsgard wanted to make a movie similar to the Icelandic sagas and put a lot of work into authenticity and placing a seeress and shamans into the story for the mythological aspect. The attendants wanted marvel.
Actual reasons: >Terrible lack of promotion. The banners for it on the NYC subway forgot to even PUT THE TITLE on it >Trailers made it seem like a dumb action film for Viking LARPers >Viking fatigue, came at the end of a long line of Viking media (Vikings, AC Valhalla, Vinland Saga, Marvel’s Thor, Last Kingdom, and all sorts of DUDE MEAD AND VALHALLA AND RUNE TATTOOS crap)
For what it’s worth, it made its money back on home video and has developed a big following since then, especially among history buffs.
The market for Viking slop was already oversaturated when it came out. It’s that simple. It the same reason why Westerns stopped being as profitable by the 80’s and 90’s.
Because there's nothing there. It gives the audience no reason to care about anything happening on the screen. That's an unforgivable fault. If it wasn't done by Eggers, no one would have even noticed this flick.
except any high test traditional white man would care about seeing another high test traditional white man do something based in accordance with real white pagan values like takeing revenge against your enemies. you sound like youve just been neutered by kikstainity
On paper, it sounds fine. The execution is what makes it nothing. Do you care about every single revenge tale ever if there's a "high test traditional white man" involved? Of course not. There are plenty that are just badly made and accordingly no one gives a shit about them. That's the case with this movie.
It was quite boring and I am a /misc/ historygay. Reminiscent of what I've just seen in Dune 2, a big empty movie without an engaging story that sprinkles on some mystical lore that doesn't really add anything to the story or give depth to the setting.
There is a new trend away from le woke and le capeshit but directly into dull, long movies without any soul.
Viking history is fun and exciting, viking movies and TV series are devoid of fun and excitement.
To be fair, i think tooth-cutting is fairly obscure as far as norse practices go, and it doesn't read super well when she's moving. As a still image you can zoom into it's easier to see what's going on.
Yeah, I guess your right. I spend my free time learning about ancient history, but the average person seeing a movie wouldn't know what they are looking at.
>nobody learned from the biggest bomb of all time, the 13th warrior
I liked the book, and enjoyed the movie. why would I need to care if anyone else did or how much money it didn't make?
people don't watch historical movies and period pieces anymore
it's target audience was terminally online /misc/cels who number like 20k people at most
What does it have to do with /misc/? It has nothing to do with politics.
They were very busy crying on Youtube for Toys Story 400 and how woke it was because two women kissed for almost 1 seconds.
>rent free
It filmed near me in Wicklow, and everyone with a beard wanted to be in it, but then were told you need to speak a dead Norse language all the time. A lot of people just noped the frick out.
For what it's worth, I enjoyed the movie a lot.
zoomers are not interested in a movie with an original story
It wasnt an original story. It was literally hamlet
Every Viking story is the story of Harald Hardrada.
the witch and the lighthouse are objectively better movies
Not enough PoC for the modern audience
did you see a single commercial for it? did you see a poster for it? or any promotion at all? no. ~~*Hollywood*~~ doesn't promote all-white Viking movies.

To this day I've never seen this movie advertised, never seen a trailer, nothing. I literally only know about it because of Cinemaphile
Even as a northman myself this was boring and horribly inaccurate.
>northmans dad rapes and kills literally every member of northmans dad's wife village and family
>she hates him
>northman rapes and kills literally every member of anya taylor joy's village and family
>she loves him
what did eggman mean by this? and also what was wrong with vikings? why couldn't they build a civilization?
How do you know this? It's never shown that the village that he attacks is also her village.
Isn't she the girl who stabs one of the Vikings when they're looting?
nothing happens + skyrim references solidify it as camp
>why did it flop?

Anyas shitty attempt at a Russian accent took me right out of it
>Russian
*Norse
No. It’s a Russian accent
There were no Russians in Scandinavia back then.
You could just say you didn’t watch the movie it’s fine

>was “watching” the movie while browsing tiktok
It was kinda mid to be honest
10/10 trailer, 6/10 movie
Mid fr lil bro thought he cooked with this movie ong
tried to be mainstream and arthouse at the same time and in the end appealed to no one
Vikings are gay
They didn't advertise that it was actually a Mom NTR
Would've got all the gooners out to see it
Whitewashes history and doesn't reflect the diversity of the era.
Take your dirty paws out of me, you damn dirty ape!...
All this time I though it was the Norseman. North man? The movie has a lisp.
But you're gay.
the ads made the movie look dumb, same thing happened to kick ass and scott pilgrim
It's actually good and people don't like anything gritty.
It wasn't good.

Eggers is a hack, has never made a good movie.
>look mom I'm being contrarian on a board known for being contrarian

Simple reaaon
Too slow pace
Boring

REMINDER
the image that destroyed tv
it's way too specific but it will be a great teaching tool for highschool english teachers for the next 50 years so i think that's a win
>vikings with braces
-_-
I might be getting baited. Are you pretending to be an ignorant person writing a snarky review for the film or do you actually think they're braces?
To be fair, i think tooth-cutting is fairly obscure as far as norse practices go, and it doesn't read super well when she's moving. As a still image you can zoom into it's easier to see what's going on.

not true. my wife immediately recognized the dragur from skyrim and his sword quest in the movie version.
>Conan the Barbarian but shitty
No thanks
Was boring. It was more like a romance soap opera than a period piece.
it was nonsensically anticlimatic and that quadroon chick is ugly
>why did it flop?
vikings movies don't sell
nobody learned from the biggest bomb of all time, the 13th warrior
>but it's le good!
doesn't matter, lost the studio hundreds millions of dollars
>nobody learned from the biggest bomb of all time, the 13th warrior
I liked the book, and enjoyed the movie. why would I need to care if anyone else did or how much money it didn't make?
beacuse if it made more money, you can have the 14th warrior and 15th warrior and 16th warrior too
dishonest
best movie out of israelitewood in over a decade so if it flopped it just proves the west can't make art
