Hissrich read some of the books and really fell in love with the small "Yen, Geralt, Ciri" family and really wanted to adapt THAT. She straight up admitted that in a post-season 1 interview. That's how we ended up with this crazy mix of flashbacks and that's why the audience was so confused all the time.
