Why did people pretend to hate Dabe Cook so much back in the day?

Why did people pretend to hate Dabe Cook so much back in the day? He was the most successful comic in the world, no one actually hated him.

He did the same thing to Joe Rogan. I've never heard the bits that were apparently "stolen" but someone explained to me the Louis CK joke was pretty simple in structure, it's easy to believe multiple could do that bit organically.

jokes stem from observation to some degree, connections are made and humor is the result.
with similar starting points two people can easily conjure similar jokes. the yo-yo was invented in three different places IIRC.

Joe Rogan is less of a comedian than Dane Cook was and I disliked Dane Cook.

If you're a zoomer it confounds you as much as the star wars prequels. Back then you thought they were cool but anyone over the age of 15 then knew how cringe it was.

Pretty much this. I was like 12 or 13 when Dane Cook was at his peak and by the time I entered high school I found him to be cringe. He also didn’t do a good job evolving as a comic. Also, he was the perfect 00’s comedian- him and mencia

Viscious Circle was hands down the worst special I have ever seen. Dane was generic then and he is now

His initial Comedy Central half hour was pretty funny and demonstrated at least something new. He was very physical and energetic in an era that was about to be dominated by nerdy wallflower alt comics. And his marketability/looks gave him massive mainstream appeal. So really a lot of the hate boiled down to jealous nerd comics and contrarians who couldn't identify with an extrovert who got pussy.

        holy shit it’s like poetry

I just didn't think he was funny. All the douchebags I knew in college liked him though because he appealed to what they thought their life was like.

His comedy specials got annoying with all the screaming chicks in the audience and he would just be saying shit like "so I was in a parking lot yesterday, you know one of those places you park your car in"

I was in high school (his target demo) when he got big and all of my friends were into him.

His comedy wasn't good. There's a reason it took him damn near 20 years to find any success. Harmful if Swallowed was OK the first time I listened to it but everything after that was overracted and overemphasized frat boy stupidity. He is one of 2 comics to sell out MSG and Retaliation went platinum which is practically unheard of for a comedy album and this brought a lot visibility/scrutiny to his routine. The frat boy humor worked when he was in his 20s and 30s but as he aged into his 40s it didn't land anymore. I'll give him credit for maximizing his earnings potential and quitting while he was at the top. I really liked him in Mr. Brooks too.

So like every comic with very few exceptions?

You just made my point for me you fricking dunce. DC was a record breaking act. Retaliation (not even his best work) was the highest selling comedy album in 3 decades. By his numbers you'd think he was one of the greatest comedians that ever lived but he simply wasn't. He was attractive, took care of his body, was mildly funny, and was really innovative when it came to using the internet to promote himself but the comedy itself was very mediocre.

He was one of the first big comics for millenials. He's their version of Dice. Everyone had his first CD. And he had amazing energy that really played well in arenas, which only made him bigger.

The hate started after his retaliation CD when many people thought his schtick was bad and douchebro. But he's a genuinely good comic who came up with the best of those boston/cellar guys and they always spoke well of him.
I still think Monkey/Heist is a great joke, and one of the best enders out there. Other things hadn't aged so well but for the most part he's still funny.

This is like saying "uh no one actually hated cod, it was the biggest game franchise why do people pretend it was bad?"

Dane Cook is actually a lot like cod.
Like the other anon saying he played into high energy bouncing off the walls fun the frat bros pretended their lives were or some other people just enjoyed, while cod blasts you with fast paced +100 for kills, hit markers, and insta death weapons or perks to make you lose hours of your life in, but look back and think that shit was frustratingly annoying
