As a kid It just seemed like there wasn't enough content. Loved the first two games. Loved the cartoon. Loved the toys. But there was nothing else to really grab on to.
All those things seemed fairly popular but there was no real way to get deeper into the franchise.
Then the N64 game came to late and made sure all momentum was dead.
The 3D game flopped so horribly it killed any interest to coninue the franchise. Tennapel's reputation certainly didn't help either; no mainstream studio wants to work with him anymore.
Speaking of Tennapel, what happened to that reboot? The one with the trailer where they make Jim say he's pro-troony just to spite him and flaunt that they stole the franchise from him, I mean.
The last update was in November, and there was no new information. If they don't say anything about it until the end of the year, I'll presume it was cancelled.
I think it did about as well as it could have done for an IP that refused to take itself seriously. It has a cartoon and two popular games despite having no real story, world building or continuity.
Beyond the theme song, you were just supposed to accept that Jim existed, his supporting cast existed and he's been fighting random wacky villains for a while now. There was no lore or more grounded comics to keep fans immersed like TMNT.
Regardless I would say it's legacy has endured more than other 90's multimedia mascots like Street Sharks and Biker Mice From Mars. And I would say those are two of the more popular ones.
EWJ 3D halted a lot of the momentum. That game sucked. I have fond memories of the first 2 games and the TV show was way better than it had any right to be. Also, I'd say the fact the 90's were ending around that time and the whole "gross-out humor" aesthetic that was HUGE in the 90's was on its way out of style.
EWJ was planned to be the next big thing like TMNT. There was a toyline and an animated series. The toyline bombed and many toys planned never got made. The animated series was lucky to get 2 seasons. EWJ was then sold off to another company in the late 90s. EWJ 3D for N64 was a piece of shit and was the end of EWJ.
Even as a kid I got the vibe that it was just a full on parody of 90s mascots that was more concerned with taking the piss than being a legitimate thing. I mean have you seen the ending of the second game?
The cartoon tried to turn it into something a little more grounded and superhero like, but the games just felt like they were just a stream of consciousness filled with absurdist humor that sort of fit together.
Even then, it's still getting toys and comics, which is more than a lot of mascots from that time can say.
>great animation
>Creative level design
>awful collision and feedback system
You never knew when you were taking damage
Well, when you hear Jim scream "AAAAAYYYYEEEOOUWWWWW", he's taking damage.

There was supposed to be a new game for the Amico, but since that was cancelled, it's looking like said game is as well.

It was a product of its time.
