He hasn’t practiced anything in a decade and doesn’t even have the mental clarity to properly use the force. The show hasn’t degraded or humiliated him anymore than the ending of RoTS did (so far, at least). We’re just witnessing the aftermath and how he bounces back.

I’m not defending what we’ve seen of Reva or some of the action scenes, but Obi’s arc isn’t an issue.

          >He hasn’t practiced anything in a decade and doesn’t even have the mental clarity to properly use the force.
Which doesn't fit with the ending of ROTS where Obi-Wan is curious and excited when Yoda tells him to continue to learn the Force in order to talk to Qui-Gon's ghost.

The writers have used the PTSD excuse to make him 100% incompetent. There's no way a Jedi in hiding for 10 years would forget to use Leia's code name but they had to make him look like a complete buffoon in every single scene.

Also its just damn boring to do PTSD in a kids show because just like Luke in TLJ he will just flip a switch and fix all his problems in one scene after a talk with Qui-Gon. It's funny how only the white males "cut themselves off from the Force". Ahsoka lost everything Obi-Wan did but never gave up. Leia watched her son turn into a school shooter and her brother try to kill him but didn't tell the Force to frick off and was ready to train Rey.

Season 2 should be autobiographical. He should stay on Tatooine protecting Luke but we should also flash back to various moments in his life to basically tell his life story from birth on.

Season 2 should end with the Obi Wan - Maul lightsaber battle from Rebels, and then Obi Wan watching Luke look at the twin suns and then fade out

  20. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

George wrote them into a corner.
ROTS ending the way it did forces Obi-Wan to be on Tatooine for the entire reign of the Empire and to be a sad, defeated man who has all but given up, wasting away for 2 decades not helping anyone.
He basically has to not care anymore, otherwise he would be fighting the Empire.
The classy thing to do would be to not put him in such situations or better yet, don't make this show at all.

      Anonymous

He doesn’t have to be sad though. He could just live a simple life watching over Luke, protecting him, and waiting to train him. Obi Wan is convinced that Luke is actually the chosen one so he has one more mission in life before he passes and that is protecting and training the chosen one. In a sense his mission is more important than a bunch of proto-rebels who run small anti-imperial missions and fail. By staying on Tatooine, Obi Wan does actually save the galaxy.

No. Leia has protection and support and insane comfort on Alderran. Luke doesn’t. Bail protects Leia, Obi Wan protects Luke. Plus, Obi Wan has a quasi-religious conviction about the boy (which is ultimately proven correct)

It is poorly directed, and the teleporting was a big issue, but you can argue the other points. Vader being down for some cat and mouse now that he's caught Obi's scent works fine, and the chick shot the trooper that was actively about to go snatch up Obi before cutting the rest off so the droid could get him out. If she just shot at Vader, the one trooper would still be on top of Obi and possibly just shoot him in retaliation, and they would have nothing else to focus on besides shooting back at her. It wasn't a well done conclusion to the episode by any means, but there are better things to dislike about it.

Vader always hated himself himself and wants to be put down like the idiot he is. Lighting a fire under Obi-wan's ass is his best chance at having good win some day, at least as far as he knows at the time.

Lucas gets royalties when they use the original designs. They scrapped almost every one that they could get away with and replaced them with legally distinct knockoffs, which is why you sometimes see duller, brown versions of old designs. The "canon" reason for this is because the First Order enacted a genocide off screen and wiped but missed all the Chinese knock off races.

I'm trying really hard to like this show. I don't mind what they've done with Obi-Wan, I was expecting the show to be about him rediscovering himself after losing faith in the aftermath of the Jedi's defeat.

I like Little Leia, she's adorable and totally feels like a 10 year old Leia to me. I'm not a big fan of how this show seems to be implying Leia met Obi-Wan ten years before ANH and somehow never put together that Ben is Obi-Wan, but I love how Little Leia reminds him of Padme and it makes him sad, and I loved the scene where she asks him if he's her father.

I also don't like that Vader and Obi-Wan have a fight, because it really undermines the whole "When last we met I was the student, now I am the master" line, which was already on thin ice based on ROTS. And I thought Vader randomly killing people was dumb, but whatever, he's in a bad mood.

But then there's the problem of Third Sister. It's not the character I hate, conceptually she's fine, and I even think her motivations and plans are solid. No, the problem is the actress is fricking TERRIBLE. Holy shit, she's so bad. How does someone that bad land a gig like this? She's completely unconvincing, wooden, and just...uncool.

Worse, she's surrounded by villains who ARE cool. The Grand Inquistor? Fricking awesome, such a sinister, creepy looking dude and I loved the way he talked. Then the Asian alien dude with the weird hat? He's cool too. I want to see more of him. But Third Sister? Jesus fricking Christ. She's pure tedium. Everytime she's on screen I'm like "I don't believe you! I don't believe you are an evil badass!"

Glad to see someone on the same page. Its still the midpoint of the series though, I'm still holding out that a second duel will happen that will put things into a more sensible perspective. Obi-wan getting it together, actually connecting with the force, and showing Anakin that he's still too young in some form would do a lot of good. That opening scene of the series was definitely a lot of fun, so there's still hope that they can put on a good fight before it ends.

Just watched Obi-Wan and Vader's duel, and it made be appreciate how Lucas did it in RotS, even if it went on too long and was overindulgence. This just seems so flat, and that constant stop-and-go with shots that look the same makes it all come off as slow. Vader does his appearing out of nowhere shit three times in a row, and the end where he pushes Obi-Wan out of the fire, away from himself, and then tells a stormtrooper to go get him. Vader is right fricking there. He just put Obi into the fire and then force pushed him away. Why the frick didn't he just walk over there him or use the force to pull him back? Why did he decide to stop doing anything at that point and instead send a single guy to go fetch him when he's RIGHT FRICKING THERE A FEW FEET AWAY. And then the same fire starts again because of someone shooting it, and Vader just stands there looking like a moron instead of stopping the fire, walking through it or fricking walking around it. It all seems so fricking strange. The only excuse is if Vader let him get away on purpose, but then there's still the problem of it all being executed like a fan film.

And why not show flashbacks of Obi-Wan and Anakin together BEFORE the confrontation, thus allowing for more emotion by having the contrast of scenes of their friendship clash with the fight

So I'll say it again, I don't think Vader wants to win. He doesn't want to just punch down at Obi-Wan at his lowing point, he wants things to be made right. He does everything in his fricked up mind short of begging to get Obi-Wan to be a hero jedi again. As for their previous relationship, as if anyone watching the show isn't aware of their relationship, the show is only 6 episodes. They just don't have the time to fix everything the prequels did wrong on top of figuring out how to do their own shit right.

        >As for their previous relationship, as if anyone watching the show isn't aware of their relationship,
It's been almost 2 decades since we last saw them together as friends. You need that reminder and you need it in the context of the show where we're seeing them duel again. Besides which, my other criticism stands. The scenes feel cheap, slow and rigid. Vader teleports three times in a row. They have similar shots of Vader appearing and Obi-Wan running away multiple times, and the part with the fire seems awkward as hell, and even if Vader lets him get away, it looks silly when it's just a narrow bit of fire that separates them
        >the show is only 6 episodes. They just don't have the time to fix everything the prequels did wrong on top of figuring out how to do their own shit right.
The problem is that it's all backwards. If you don't have time, then don't have the confrontation take place in the first season. Of course, you and I both know that they fought in season 1 because due to the business side of things

i think they were trying to foreshadow vader reconsidering what he's doing when he was staring into the fire. There is no excuse for the push away, just lazy screenwriting.

It would have made more sense if obi wan started the fire and vader reacted in fear. Obi wan then taunts him for never getting over fear, or offers to help as he failed him and now he knows what fear is etc. Vader then loses it, breaks through obi wans force defence, extinguishes the fire, starts monologuing about the dark side and stepping forward over the fuel to watch obi wan choke. The lady then starts the fire which should have been much bigger, vader engulfed in flames panics and retreats. Drops obi wan in the flame and watches his old friend getting burned like he was before being rescued by the droid. Do a wide wide shot showing vader and the troopers cant reach them then show vader staring into the flames. Maybe even chuck in the echo of the i hate you exchange just to remind people of the prophecy and the reason luke and leia are important

So I suppose all the manchildren whining about Obi being depressed never watched Episodes 3 or 4?

      Anonymous

Obi-Wan didn't act depressed in 4 at all. The most we see of his melancholy is when he talks about Anakin in his hut, and that's a few short lines

        Anonymous

He's not some swashbuckling wisecracking in episode 4, he's a reserved, yet sometimes whimsical hermit. Obi in the show posses some of those qualities but is more depressed, clearly his growth is to become more zen by the time of the OT.

It's like OP only watched attack of the clones and thinks the guy should be acting like he does there

He was great in episode 4, he was whimsical and patient with Luke when needed, but when push came to shove he wasn't afraid to slice someone's arm off.

It was very clear he was a once noble protector of the weak who had seen some serious shit.

That's what the show SHOULD be about. An Unforgiven style story of a lonely jedi in the desert who's lost everything who finds a reason to keep going and keep his old values.

Instead he has inquisitors chasing after him, is doing rescue missions for Leia and even battling Vader.

No we just want some consistency and quality of writing. Start spending more time watching the movies and making Obi-Wan likable than casting black female leads.

This show is so fricking bad.

Mando and Boba were great but clearly Disney has their trash garbage tier team working on this crap. Nit sure I can even bother watching for free.

      Anonymous

Mando was a complete fluke. Boba was trash too.

Mando worked because the main incompetent goons at the top of lucasfilm were laser focused on Rise of Skywalker and just let Favreu and Filoni do their own thing.

Then of course once it became a hit they couldn't resist inserting themselves into the show to try and make it more profitable.

It's why the Grogu bullshit was cranked up to the extreme in the second season.

Vader was killing people to draw Obi-Wan out of hiding. It's like you gays didn't see the clone wars show, they're both unrepentant heroes so anakin knows exactly what's going to get on obi-wan's nerves.

Reading about this (cause there's no way I'm watching it) just makes me even more surprised Top Gun Maverick turned out the exact opposite way. Both named after the main protagonist who is returning from a beloved story after a very long absence. Star Wars disrespects its protagonist and treats him as if they were never worthy of being loved, only capable of serving as a vehicle to promote newer younger characters that fit into modern conventions and agendas of the showrunners. Top Gun reveres its protagonist and reminds the audience of why they loved him, not only that but promotes them even further by showing that time has not erased their glory, and that they are as necessary and valuable as ever, their timeless qualities shining through any conflict and inspiring both old and young, without controversy or at the cost of anyone else's inclusion or enjoyment.

Had Disney Lucasfilm just done this with Luke Skywalker, ALL of their films would be making $2 billion now and they’d be putting out 1-2 every year.

It’s amazing how much they destroyed their brand through insane pettiness

Yep. Mandalorian managed to succeed briefly because Disney didn't swarm it. As soon as it became semi-successful you could see the quality nose dive. Women and homosexual men largely make up the decision makers and writers these days. Women and homosexual men are enormously preoccupied about what they can fit inside themselves. This occupies at least 75% of their waking cognition. When you walk past a bowling pin or a soda can do you wonder if you can fit it up your ass/pussy? Well, women and homosexual men do and they do it with everything. Even while writing, they can't escape how important it is to insert things into themselves and it actually becomes obvious in the way they write characters. Every character is written like they're having their hand held while lowering themselves down on to a wiener. They speak in this very "d...do...you think I can do it...?" obsequious way. Don't be surprised if Obi-Wan in every scene acts like he's about to put a dildo up his ass while eating a bunch of ice cream.

They were running news articles about how they warned Miss Bossy Black Chick about racism in the Star Wars community before the first fricking episode aired. Now Ewan is weighing in and telling us oh no, le racism is bad. Yidsney thinks I'm a racist, Obi-Wan thinks I am or might be.... it kinda does suck the joy out of it. I don't understand what these chucklefricks are thinking.

they were prepping the narrative because they knew in pre screening it sucked. now all criticism is racist. Leia is the huge problem but Disney is playing operation get behind the darkies to suck all criticism toward Reva because they can always defend against waycisms.

nobody complained about Moff Gideon, maybe because the guy could act and the character wasn't complete shit.

            >I'm not a racist so the show is good, I'll keep watching because I'm not racist.

just try to logically explain to him why it's bad. he might actually agree but he's too afraid to take a position that's been labeled racist.

it won't do any good in the short term but once he sees what they do, he'll never be able to unsee it. A person like him will probably just quietly walk away, never bash it but just stop watching it.

I imagined he would have spent the time training / force meditating to keep his powers sharp until he unlocked the force ghost ability. I like to think that Darth and Obi were actually at the peak of their Force skills in their duel in anh. And the fight is slow and calculate because of no room for error and also because when you are the master of space magic you probably don't need to do dance moves and pirouettes
