"Why did this NEED to be animated?" is a question we NEED to stop asking. It doesn't fricking matter if King Of The Hill "needed" to be animated. What matters is that it IS animated and that gives it an entirely different appeal than what it would have if it was a live action sitcom. This dumbass mindset just limits what animation can be. The medium does not HAVE to overtly fantastical or cartoony to justify itself.

But KOTH is one of the greatest sitcoms of all time? I see people ask this about shitty shows like Brickleberry
Brickleberry is shit but it definitely wouldn't work in live action. That genre of cheap edgy surreal sitcoms with talking animals is something that could only be done in animation, unfortunately
>shitty shows like Brickleberry
That's less "why was this animated" and more "why was this made at all".
I might get a lot of shit for saying this, but Paradise PD was better. Farzar was the worst of the bunch.
There were moments when KotH used its animated nature to do outlandish and surreal things. Hell, the fact that the characters never age is a subtle but effective way to use the medium.
>used its animated nature to do outlandish and surreal things
You can thank Rough Draft Korea for that 😉
KotH also uses a lot of camera angles that would make it too expensive for a normal sitcom budget.
The kids did age.
>"Why did this NEED to be animated?"
People asked the same thing about this.
this would not be as effective if it were live action
Easily the best stop motion movie ever made
Horrible taste
Go home Wes Anderson
Okay, Harry Dean Stanton
I don't trust americans to make anything animated anymore. It's always the same tweened puppets, thin line, low budget cgi shit, or korean fauxnime.
Cinemaphile is that way
because they do it better? animation-wise something like KotH can't be made in america today
weeaboo homosexual
>animation-wise something like KotH can't be made in america today
real
Actually Americans are damn good at making anime now, they just don't for some reason. Look at Castlevania and tell me it isn't on par with Japanese stuff.
Japanese studio made it actually
I'm sure individuals can make something anime-y, but generally it seems like 80% percent of animators from the pre-flash and CGI era died without passing their skills down to anyone. Every attempt to emulate their style in modern times like the Animaniacs reboot and the upcoming X-Men just feels wrong.
Voice actors are probably cheaper and easier to work with than real actors, it might be worth the extra expense animating has over live action if you can sidestep divas. Just dodge Yuri Lowenthal and Tara Strong and you're good.
t, talking out my ass and making blind assumptions about animation and live action
There are a lot of practical and legal challenges with child actors, and cartoons can just sidestep all of it. A family oriented sitcom can run for a longer time without worrying about the kids aging out of the show.
>The medium does not HAVE to overtly fantastical or cartoony to justify itself.
This, jesus christ. There's a reason why Slice of Life shows are so rampant in the anime side of things. Some people just like shit being normal.
I never understood why people said this about KOTH. Most Dale plots get super wacky.
