Most of the episodes with Beth and Summer are fricking terrible so go figure. It definitely peaked in season 1.
I liked season 1 and 2. Lost interest after that.
Ya season 1 felt fresh, and like they knew what they wanted to do with the show. Season 2 had that too, but it didn't hit me the same as season 1, and everything past that point was Adult Swim just cashing out.

It was terrible. That episode did not make me laugh once, so the best it could do was try to gross me out with the visceral gore. It was also the first episode that made me realize season 3 was gonna suck.
Then we get the ending montage of the writer blogging about her thoughts on Rick as a character and then Rick actually has to reflect on it. The only woman that made Rick feel this way before was fricking Unity, a literal hivemind superbeing.
If the episode ending with Rick giving the middle finger to the asian lady and saying he doesn't need to hear pseudointellectual crap from a fricking mall therapist while he wubalubadudubs out of there, then maybe the episode could be redeemed. But the writer can't have her precious self-insert be belittled.

the pickle rick ep is maybe the only piece of media i've ever seen that is simultaneously overrated and underrated.
the haters act like the premise is extra absurd when it really isn't dumber than the usual episode gimmicks. the writers just intentionally make the characters react to it as more cartoonish (on purpose to highlight rick using it to escape from his problems). it's ironic that these types like to think they're more enlightened that the typical fans of the show when they mostly hold a low opinion of the episode because they're too dumb to realize they were tricked. they also get triggered by the therapist which i can understand, she's annoying, they just overreact to how annoying she is
the people who love it focus too much on the last three minutes of the episode when everything else in it was pretty meh. the therapists speech at the end where she tears rick down is fine as an idea but the delivery comes off as so smug and grating that i think most viewers end up being torn on whether they agree with her (which is dumb because the episode only works if you agree with her). if the writers could have dialed it back a bit and made this scene less smug, i think it would've been more effective.
overall it's an ok episode, probably even above average when looking at every episode that exists to date, but i think it mostly just gets attention because its been memed to death online. i've got a few friends who like the show but have more normie internet tastes and none of them even remember that episode in particular. it only has "significance" because of the online shitflinging it started

The therapist isn't even the bad thing about that episode, the show was better when it was Rick and Morty, not family drama sprinkled with Gen X nihilism filtered through millenial irony. Harmon was done with Community and asserted himself more on the writing of Rick & Morty. I like Harmon and Community, but if you notice a difference specifically between S1-2 and S3 on, it seems like it would have to be his influence.
