Because he wanted to be a hero to the Fire Nation, probably. Imagine the glory of stopping the Avatar and being honored by the Fire Lord. Ironically, this is also what Zuko wanted in season 1.

Probably what said, but I always imagined him taking his profession very seriously and considers it a stain on his honor if he fails or quits a contract.
Also, he was cool as frick.

So, did they ever expand on how he was the only forehead bender or was he just forgotten?

I think it was just a very rare technique.

Wasn't it one of those combinations that a bender with mix parents could do? Like lava bending?

I'm thinking a matter of pride since they both eluded and humiliated him for such a long time.

I don't think so, I honestly just thought bending technique was a matter of perspective, the fact that water and fire had their own temperature/state controlling abilities it sort of makes sense that lavabending is just realizing then figuring out how to do that with Earth.
Though I can only see combustion bending being a combo of air and fire if you were right, and I feel like the idea of the airbender's descendents being the most purely destructive bending form isn't something they'd just leave as unspoken lore.

Those few times the Gaang got away and humiliated him made it personal.

Probably a matter of personal pride or ego.

why the frick does he bend with his forehead? why make him breath spit a firebomb instead? that way they could explain that he was just born with powerful lungs allowing him to use the technique and then his weakness would make sense because if something hits his throat really hard he's not gonna be able to take the deep breath he needs to shoot fire loogies.

They breathe from their stomach absorbing their sea of chi then shoots it through their Light Chakra

I guess the implication is that it was pride related or ego. It would've been better if he wasn't a mute for no fricking reason and could explain himself.

I thought he was just pissed because they kept getting away and also they had already hit him once in his head-eye which nearly made him blow himself up.
