People really don't understand how investigations work. The police almost always know who has committed the crime but what matters is being able to prove that they did it and that's something they can't always do hence why interrogators try to get suspects to incriminate themselves

They interview other people in this very same case. There is footage of one of their fellow law students who was a mutual friend and it's a great baseline actually if you want to get a read on why they already suspected Stayvun and to understand their frustration when they still couldn't get him on the interview.
