Why didn't Jesus just show him a trick to prove he really was the son of God?

Why didn't Jesus just show him a trick to prove he really was the son of God? What, he can bust out the water into wine trick at parties for his friends but not in front of a king under pain of torture and death?

    Tons of reason.

    >not a clown
    >J wasn’t the only one with parlor tricks
    >the whole thing was a trap to complete a particular mission

he wasn't a rabbi, that's israelite propaganda you fell for. the original rabbis were the pharisees he fought against, of course you probably knew that

There's no evidence outside of the gospels that Jesus had any discernible theological disputes with the Pharisees. They agree on nearly everything. The Pharisees of the gospels are retconned into being boogie men so that a conflict can take place.

      consider jesus' responses when he's tempted by the devil in the desert;
      >“It is written: One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.”
      >“Again it is written, you shall not put the Lord, your God to the test.”
      >“Get away Satan! It is written: The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve.”
It's kinda the same idea. God isn't a magic show to pull out whenever commanded, the miracles are mostly small and sometimes strange events to show earnest people the way forward. plus, herod was a complete sophist that just wanted to debunk jesus anyway, so in not speaking he tacitly rejects herod's claimed authority over him, fills a few prophecies, and has herod's own lunacy expose itself just by not engaging

      also this
the 2000 version is way better (herod in particular is infinitely superior) and the 2010s (no idea what year) version where the pharisees are silicon valley-types is probably the best available
though the 2000 judas and caiaphas rock

It's really interesting to look at the different staging choices. Deliberately choosing someone who can't really sing for Herod is pretty brilliant.

In the 70's movie the physical distance between Jesus and Judas makes it seem like Judas trying to convince himself of the need to stop things, rather than making an attempt to talk to Jesus and being rebuffed.

One thing I've noticed a lot of people overlook, religious or otherwise, is that an extremely important theme in the Bible is free will and choosing to believe. The God of the Bible wants his followers to choose to follow him

      >given life and forced into the world (not free will)
      >I want you to choose to believe in me, if you don't or are confused about the teachings then you don't get resurrected
      >yeah the churches are all teaching nonsense and the word of god is twisted or altered BUT the real message is out there for you to discover

It isn't a fair set up, it isn't a good setup.

In the Old Testament though, humanity chose free will and the consequences of it. Eating the fruit is symbolic for choosing agency

I don't think that is fair either, ADAM and EVE did, everyone else didn't. God says that children shouldn't suffer the sins of their fathers and that sin is solely on the individual so why does original sin apply to everyone after.
Did I have free will to do that? No, the choice was done for me, I have sin so now I have to do something about it.

I think of adam and eve as avatars for humanity as a whole

Does the bible support that? Why would someone else suffer for their mistakes?
You don't actually have to give people original sin if you (God) respects free will and free belief.

I think you're misunderstanding me anon, I'm not taking the bible as fact, I'm interpreting it in a narrative sense

                Anonymous

Even if you do, it still contradicts itself.
Why does Free Will have to come with original sin? Ezekiel 18:20:
The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

Those are the laws of man, God doesn't have to obey anything.
Take for example "Thou shalt not kill," you know what God did most of the OT?

              >Try to live without sinning, genius. Has it worked so far?
You don't know a thing about me. What is the point of free will then?

Those are the laws of man, God doesn't have to obey anything.
Take for example "Thou shalt not kill," you know what God did most of the OT?

Yeah maybe since God does kill sinners families in the OT.
