Why where they pushing her to become a Cosmetologist? Specially since she drop out to enroll in community college. Which she ended up dropping out of to intent Beauty School.
Because Luanne got flanderized into a bigger dummy as the show went on.

She had the talent but did she have the passion? Though I thinkk the show missed a step by forgetting her mechanical knowhow and using it as a bonding point with Lucky since they literally met because his truck but then whenever they talked she spoke like her auto knowledge was she knows who Tow Mater is voiced by.
She'll probably be moved to Montana and her and Lucky given a happy offscreen life.

Because the first three seasons aren't really canon
I really think they missed an opportunity with Luanne they way she was portrayed in the episode where she turns 21 and drags Hank to the bar as her designated driver ("Night and Deity"). In that episode she seems less dumb but still gullible enough to fall for cheesy pickup lines and so on.
Then they got her back for more episodes starting the next season but seemed to decide the best way to handle her was to regress her.
But I don't know the behind-the scenes. In that period Brittany Murphy went from being a movie star to self-destructing completely, and her cast mates have been pretty tight lipped about what it was like to work with her in that era.
There is one callback to her mechanic skills in an episode from the last season, but it doesn't really mean anything. That season has a lot of callbacks to things they had forgotten about, maybe as a sort of self-tribute when they knew they were probably not coming back.

When they did an episode about Peggy's family some years later, her mother looked different, acted different and her backstory had changed (though weirdly they still got the same actress to voice her).

Because she's a girl and girls just fix their own trucks. Luanne is committed to gender roles (hence the hair stylist career) but if she was more liberal, she'd shine as a mechanic. That's one of those "Lol these people are wrong" jokes that are scattered throughout the series.
It's also why I liked the Goode Family, because the message was "These people aren't right either."
