I feel like if american dad ever tackled trans people, it’d go something like this
    >stan and hayley are arguing over whether trans people actually do exist
    >stan: hayley, do you really think god would put someone in the wrong body? No, he doesn’t make mistakes. God wouldn’t have a girl be stuck in a boy’s body and let that sli-
    >steve walks in
    >Stan: …Okay, maybe trans people are real, but god doesn’t put them in the wrong body by mistake, he puts them in the wrong body as a hurdle, like the hurdle a father has to overcome when he realizes god’s never gonna give him an actual son, just a girl or a girl stuck inside a boy like a russian nesting doll… damn russians.

Because trannies weren't a political issue back then.

Roger is already a great walking joke about all those made up genders

When it came out the political valence the center left was in opposition to Bush W's poorly justified invasion of Iraq and the War on Terror in general. After they dragged on for over a decade and Seth lost interest in the show, the writers moved in a different direction

Because when they were still doing political commentary, transgender stuff hadn't blown up like it had on social media. Hell, I doubt social media was even a thing yet either.

Myspace would be fairly new at that point.
Keep in mind that the vast majority of mainstream transgender jokes back then pretty much boiled down to "holy shit I got drunk and fricked that!" or "me before the surgery". So you'd have to stretch an episodes worth of jokes out of that

I wrote a nice letter to the studio and said "Please" don't. They care about their fanbase.

They actually had an ep with a troony providing the voice of a woman. Closest they came.

Roger was already a transexual. So you know.. masterful writing when you think about it.

I think doing a troony episode would be hard because of Roger. Also they had all those troony jokes in the Boys 12 episode.

trannies don’t like drag queens because they consider them “transface”

Trannies were not nearly as prominent when the show was still about political satire. Back then, both left and right agreed that troons were loons to laugh at. Post-OWS was when the elites tried normalizing it as a distraction tactic.

American dad did actually do a troony episode, its the one where Steve pretends to be a woman to join the rollerblading team, and he ends up genuinely gender questioning, and then deciding he's a guy after all and they celebrate that. It's actually done rather respectfully and its an earlier episode

The juxtaposition in the song of Steve doubting his gender and Hayley being worried she isn't tolerant is great.
