No. Iroh was always polite, except when once pretended to be paralized by her beast, just so he can lay on June. But June was always rude to him in the cartoon, so noone cared.
Sokka was believing in more traditional gender roles, similar to the northern water tribe, but it was used in that show to promote feminism, by always disproving him, and mock him, or make him apologize. It was subversive, israeli/feminist propaganda.

Any seemingly great idea Zhao had was Azula's schemes. But he got powermad, and killed the moon spirit (thankfully in the Netflix show). He was dumb and spiteful, cartoon Iroh always had the upper hand against him. Zhao rather chose death than being spared in the cartoon. His Netflix actor was ok.
Pajeet bumi sucked. I always disliked the character, even in the cartoons, both old and young, but I hate his pajeet version even more.
Suki was cast well, though details about the actress have spoiled her for me.

Toph was the second most powerful living female bender in the cartoon (after Azula). Metalbending done well could be amazing, like saw, as gorey.

Toph vs Azula is really unresolved, Toph is clearly far more skilled (mastered three alternate bending forms as opposed to one) unfortunately metal bending is a massive liability against someone with electrical powers.

Besides casting Toph my biggest worry is how they depict Ty Lee's abilities, her acrobatics really need to be practical effects however some of it is damn near the limit of what you can expect on their budget. I hope they don't some crap like hire a contortionist then CGI the actresses face onto her.

You have to find it funny how they tried to make Sokka “less sexist” but then somehow the writers managed to turn Suki into some sexist stereotype of a virgin girl so smitten with a guy that he becomes her entire personality.
Most interesting characters in this fricking shitshiw ngl. They gotta find a way to tell the other main fire actress to just lose weight, by next season she is just gonna look ridiculous.
She looked cuter in the flashback. You know, if they only used her to play a "three years younger Azula" she wouldn't be bad, but she's just not "main Azula" potential.
Ozai staying almost entirely offscreen in the original show was such a wise decision. it really made all his scenes have impact and meant they didn't have to pointlessly humanize him like this.

What was there was pretty faithful to the CENTRAL story.
Unfortunately a lot of the side stories and 'filler' episodes were mangled and compressed together. I actually didn't remember most of them, but the one that stood out to me as being jarringly different was June capturing Aang at Roku's shrine.
Looking back at the season 1 episode synopses they actually cut out a shit ton of content, episodes that serve as necessary world-building.
I mean assuming that they were given a budget and episode limit for Netflix, the adaptation is the best we could probably hope for, since you can't exactly waste even half an episode on some of the slower worldbuilding episodes, which is why I gave it an 8/10, because what we got was pretty faithful.
If one were harsher, the lowest I'd go would be 7/10.
All and all a good adaptation. Will never replace the cartoon but has some genuine heartfelt moments and captures part of the spirit of the series.
Enough to make me want to rewatch the entire cartoon again from beginning to end.
I just watched critical's review (only vaguely aware of who he is, don't follow internet celebs but his review is one of the few up).
I agree with him point for point on all his criticisms and praises, but somehow he gave it a 50% on his 'moistmeter' whatever that means, whereas I give it a 70-80%.
I don't think I'm going to find a more objective reviewer though so I'm just going to disregard all their ratings wholesale.
The live action is genuinely good.
I teared up 3-4 times I think. All the main character actors were great and charming in their own way.
Zuko's actor is really good. He really shone in the Masks episode and the subsequent ones.
Ozai, Zuko, Iroh, Zhao casting was ok. It's the fire nations females that are the trash cast. Which is odd, because usually it's easier to find asian females to simp over, and asian males to bully, than the reverse.
Zuko and Sokka actors are the only decent ones, everyone else I'm not that big on. Aang is doing okay. Really hard to replace Mako's voice for Iroh, still doesn't feel like the same character from the show.

She can't sand bend very well at all. That was a main point when they were in the desert. What they do forget is that she could just trap Azula and squish her.
Of course she can do it, but she has stated it is static-like to see and she can only do weaker pushes of stand, at least during most of the show. In the sand Azula would destroy her. I agree Toph is better later on, but Azula mastered lightning before Toph did metal. Overall you are correct that Azula fights too kill while Toph doesn't. If she did she would quickly kill most enemies over solid earth.

Aside of the uninteresting characters with the exception of Toph, the villains with no character development, the amateurish voice acting from the kids, the fact that half of the episodes are filler, the in-your-face feminism, Katara becoming a mary-sue and all the plot-holes and plot conveniences in season 3. Oh and the whole deal about Zuko's mother being unsolved.
Only problem is, he would have also made an excellent Iroh and Roku. So much so, that he makes the poor performances of both of them here look even shittier. Which is very bad because they are so critically important to the tone and soul of the whole series that it basically kills the entire show.
Gyatsu was pretty good casting. Had just the right amount of "mentor" in his voice and delivery.
I think that with him tellin Aang that he choose to stay in the spirit realm for Aang, we will likely see him a lot. Which is good because the actor is good and hits the ¨old wise asian master¨ part better that Iroh does.

OP here. I'm now on episode 3 and you guys lied about Jet living in Omashu.
Jet was just inside Omashu, but he still has his forest base. It doesn't look like we're even getting Bumi this episode so the episode titled "Omashu" is just Jet combined with the Mechanist, which makes a lot more thematic sense.
And Bumi isn't Jet's main target. It's just the Mechanist and the spies in general, but it's alright if Bumi dies because of his inaction anyways. Both he and the Mechanist have the same motives as the cartoon.
if Katara and Azula and Suki and Yue's characterization is anything to go off of, then they'll turn Toph into a flawless character who doesn't actually act tough but has people tell her how tough she is, and also she won't be blind because that's ableist or something. If this crap gets a season 2 they need to fire the moron director, the cinematographers, the writers, and put some real talent in there instead, regardless of how fricking "Asian" they are. This show is a lesson against race conscious casting, because trying to turn this into a majority Asian work (even among the non-acting crew, which they said they were trying to do) has just stacked some of the worst people in film into one show. Sad.

Besides casting Toph my biggest worry is how they depict Ty Lee's abilities, her acrobatics really need to be practical effects however some of it is damn near the limit of what you can expect on their budget. What was there was pretty faithful to the CENTRAL story.
Unfortunately a lot of the side stories and 'filler' episodes were mangled and compressed together. I actually didn't remember most of them, but the one that stood out to me as being jarringly different was June capturing Aang at Roku's shrine.
Looking back at the season 1 episode synopses they actually cut out a shit ton of content, episodes that serve as necessary world-building.
I mean assuming that they were given a budget and episode limit for Netflix, the adaptation is the best we could probably hope for, since you can't exactly waste even half an episode on some of the slower worldbuilding episodes, which is why I gave it an 8/10, because what we got was pretty faithful.
If one were harsher, the lowest I'd go would be 7/10.
All and all a good adaptation. Will never replace the cartoon but has some genuine heartfelt moments and captures part of the spirit of the series.
Enough to make me want to rewatch the entire cartoon again from beginning to end.

I just watched critical's review (only vaguely aware of who he is, don't follow internet celebs but his review is one of the few up).
I agree with him point for point on all his criticisms and praises, but somehow he gave it a 50% on his 'moistmeter' whatever that means, whereas I give it a 70-80%.
I don't think I'm going to find a more objective reviewer though so I'm just going to disregard all their ratings wholesale.
The live action is genuinely good.
I teared up 3-4 times I think. All the main character actors were great and charming in their own way.
Zuko's actor is really good. He really shone in the Masks episode and the subsequent ones.

Aside of the uninteresting characters with the exception of Toph, the villains with no character development, the amateurish voice acting from the kids, the fact that half of the episodes are filler, the in-your-face feminism, Katara becoming a mary-sue and all the plot-holes and plot conveniences in season 3. Oh and the whole deal about Zuko's mother being unsolved.
Watching it now. Aang and Zuko literally have better chemistry with each other than Aang does with Katara and Sokka.
Gyatsu was pretty good casting. Had just the right amount of "mentor" in his voice and delivery.
Only problem is, he would have also made an excellent Iroh and Roku. So much so, that he makes the poor performances of both of them here look even shittier. Which is very bad because they are so critically important to the tone and soul of the whole series that it basically kills the entire show.
I think that with him tellin Aang that he choose to stay in the spirit realm for Aang, we will likely see him a lot. Which is good because the actor is good and hits the ¨old wise asian master¨ part better that Iroh does.

Jet was just inside Omashu, but he still has his forest base. It doesn't look like we're even getting Bumi this episode so the episode titled "Omashu" is just Jet combined with the Mechanist, which makes a lot more thematic sense.
And Bumi isn't Jet's main target. It's just the Mechanist and the spies in general, but it's alright if Bumi dies because of his inaction anyways. Both he and the Mechanist have the same motives as the cartoon.

If this crap gets a season 2 they need to fire the moron director, the cinematographers, the writers, and put some real talent in there instead, regardless of how fricking "Asian" they are. This show is a lesson against race conscious casting, because trying to turn this into a majority Asian work (even among the non-acting crew, which they said they were trying to do) has just stacked some of the worst people in film into one show.
