The truth is that there are more actresses and far more roles for women, its much easier to become an actress than an actor. They are more occupationally mobile, there is always a rapid rise available for someone who is hot and can remember their lines. Women used to complain about Cruise/Hanks/Costner and maybe Ford/Crowe getting paid colossal amounts, it never seemed to occur to them what it would mean if you were an actor that wasn't one of those guys. Basically a twenty year period where you're never going to make it. But then, those guys don't exist either.
