By looking at her reflection in the shield Perseus was able to aim his strike without beholding her full hideousness or, in later hornier versions, beauty.

Actually, isn't the look fear based? Like, if I guy had no fear of her, they could look her straight in the eye with no issue. Its sorta like how the penance stare fails if the target has lived a life free of harming others.

          Anonymous

No, it's either lethal hideousness, or a lethal paradox of hideousness and beauty, depending on how late and how horny the writer is. Fear or eye contact aren't factors, that's why Perseus had to use the shield even though she was asleep. The implication is that the distorted poor quality reflection made her visage tolerable.

            Anonymous

Hmm...would that debunk or confirm the portrayals where she hides her petrifying gaze with sunglasses then. Because on one hand it's implied her eyes are what's stoning people and that's not the case. On the other hand Maybe wearing Sunglasses breaks up her face enough that you'd be able to look at her. Cuz sunglasses do take up about 1/3rd of your face.

The greeks has already prettified Medusa well before Ovid got his hands on her.

The oldest greek gorgons are the ones with serpent-hair, wings, and human bodies, as far as I know.
The gorgoneion itself is older than even them.
      >She's unironically older than Zeus
Medusa's precursor seems to be Humbaba(who figures in the Gilgamesh epos and other things). Zeus has his roots in Dyeus of Proto-Indo-European origin. They are both incredibly old.

        >Medusa's precursor seems to be Humbaba
The "monstrous grinning face" greek motif is definitely pre-greek, and most likely not mesopotamian - there are traces of it going as far back as archeological sites dating 2000BC
The visual appearance of the early (horrid) Gorgon is straight from these - curls get turned into visually equivalent snakes, and the wings and running pose can be found on Cretan sites.

As for the story itself, it is most likely Anatolian, of the side that was closely related to Mycenean Greece, and has all the callings of a local story - I'm not sure how related to Humbaba we can make it - Humbaba's role is that of guardian, incidental to Gilgamesh's quest for Cedar, while Perseus specifically goes slay Medusa at the request of a king.

What we can discern for sure: Somewhere in 1500BC there existed a sort of vaguely defined "winged grinning goblin" creature that fulfilled the same role as the Gorgoneion, during 700 BC it became really popular as an old winged woman and by 500 it flanderized into a hot woman, specially after Ovid gave her the snake pubes.

        http://saa.uaic.ro/prehistoric-gorgoneia-a-critical-reassessment/

btw, modern depictions of the lower half body as an actual snake are inspired from Hindu Nagas, a wholly different thing. Ancient greek depictions of the snake body were very few, iirc Roman, and most likely inspired from India too.

Yep. Gorgon was originally said to have bronze wings along with snake hair and the other features. They were typically bat wings in art, but Nasu/Fate gang obviously took it in a different direction for her F/GO appearance.

What's PIE? And what other pre-greek mythological creatures from that area are there? Did the Titans and other mothers (maybe made so after the fact, like christians did with pagans) have actual altars and worshippers?

          >What's PIE?
Pre-Indo-European, ie the people who lived in Greece before the proto-Hellenic speakers arrived
          >Did the Titans and other mothers (maybe made so after the fact, like christians did with pagans) have actual altars and worshippers?
Rhea, Themis, and Mnemosyne were worshipped in Greece. The Romans conflated Cronus with their own deity Saturn, who was quite important.

          Anonymous

          >What's PIE?
Proto Indo-Europeans, aka the Kurgan / Yamnaya (burial mound) culture.
Know for inventing the chariot, being steppe nomads and subjugating the entirety of ancient Europe and like 3/4ths of India and having 1/3rd of the world's languages, greek, latin, germanic, hindi, etc descend from them. They were sorta religious zealots and brought their storm & sky god centric pantheon with them wherever they went. They arrived to Greece and kickstarted Mikenaean civilization around 1700BC

          >And what other pre-greek mythological creatures from that area are there?
          Pic related.

The oldest coherent (neé understandable) archeological finds we have are of antient Cretans aka Minoans from 2000BCish, who weren't greek, but we don't know if they actually colonized pre-greek Greece or understand much of their language really, we know that MAYBE the Gorgon, Artemis and Persephone & Demeter's myth could originate from there.

Don't worry tho'. Any monster girls they had most likely followed the Mesopotamian trend of "take an animal -> slap a woman's head on it".

          > Did the Titans and other mothers (maybe made so after the fact, like christians did with pagans) have actual altars and worshippers?
Most greek Titans and Primordial deities were invented from whole cloth in Hesiod's Theogony (700BC).

Hesiod basically gathers a Hittite myth, Song of Kumarbi, and a LOT of local folk tradition and popular names used at the time and compiled them in a genealogy. A handful of titans most likely existed as independent gods in some cities / rural areas and their worship was not much different from the rest of the greek pantheon, then got retooled into necessary branches of the genealogic narratives or anthropomorphic stand-ins for objects / human emotions (see: Oceanus's kid and Eris, Ares, Athena as wicked/neutral/righteous aspects of warfare). The most important ones ie Cronos, Ouranos, Gaia, Rhea, are most likely made on the spot.

            Anonymous

Fun note: The Hittite (ancient (PIE) Anatolians) Song of Kumarbi is a translation of a potentially pre-PIE myth by the Anatolian Hurrians (ancient Armenians), most likely made in the Mitanni kingdom, who basically coined the thing as a mythification of their victory over Sumero-Akkadian / Babylonian (Ancient Iraqi) hegemony, tracing Titans' conceptual origins of "previous gods" to nearly 1500 BC.

Why would any good man want an ugly monster when you could have a perfect, prim, and graceful, princess?

This is why we need stories about a prince having to choose between a princess, and her "ugly" monster girl maid.

      Well there is

A few years ago I wanted to make Gorgons from around the world but only made it to two.

      this one.
It's not something I generally see, though. There's a lot of snakes to draw and most people probably can't tell the difference. I've only seen one consistent type of snake in medusa hair, as in any one medusa will have all her hair as the same snake.

Zeus fricked her on an altar and Hera (maybe Aphrodite or Athena) cursed her. One of the big facts about the Medusa myth is that she's eternally pregnant and when she dies, Pegasus comes out of her neck.

Medusa was beautiful, but she didn't proclaim herself to be beautiful, nor was she cursed for it. That was Arachne.
Medusa's story is that she was a priestess of Athena, and was either seduced or raped by Poseidon in the Temple of Athena, which led to Athena cursing her and turning her into a gorgon. Athena then later sent Perseus to kill Medusa.

Most of the Greek pantheon are complete petty b***hes. It’s funny because despite being portrayed as the “evil” god, Hades is probably the best person of them. He doesn’t give a shit about the mortal drama, he just wants to do his job. Percy Jackson did this really well, they accuse him of being the bad guy and he’s just like “I don’t give a shit frick off”

The Norse Gods were the result of a bunch of cold and wet Vikings sitting around a small campfire in the middle of a snowstorm, looking around themselves, and going "Only a complete asshat could come up with this."

The Greek Gods were the result of the Greek looking at themselves and going "Man, we're AWESOME! Surely we must have been made in the image of the Gods!"

And thus you end up with Gods who are petty spiteful mysogynistic arseholes who don't have a family tree, but a family tumbleweed.

Odin found time to dick around with humans but not in a malevolent sense. Thor, of course, kills trolls which makes him a protector of humanity.

                Anonymous

Yeah, Odin only fricked with humans as tests of character, and only punished them when they failed. The most famous example is him wandering the world as an old man asking for hospitality.

Stuff like pump and dumping that one girl to get at the mead of poetry and deliberately conspiring to cheat the stonemason who built the wall of Asgard were pretty shitty

                Anonymous

Not evil, but definitely jerks. Just not towards humans. The most famous three (Odin, Loki, and Thor) were the three types of fricking shit up. Odin fricked himself up to gain some obscure advantage over his opponents. Loki fricked situations up and everyone felt the consequences. And Thor got mad and fricked other people up physically. Nearly every Norse myth has a deal that the gods double-crossed on, a robbery, and multiple murders. It's just not as apparent because the victims were other gods and giants.

                and then continue doing it
The walls of Asgard, the imprisonment of Fenrir, and a bunch of other shit. They rarely fricked around with regular mortals too much but they 100% fricked over other non-humans.

                >non-humans
It's clearly their own fault for being inferiors
wasn't the wall thing because of Loki not keeping his mouth shut during negotiations and promising something the Aesir didn't want to give? Can't blame the aesir for jotunn... though I suppose Loki's a divine mulatto since his mom is goddess... I think, it's been a long time.

I think the sequence was Aesir want wall, Stonemason wants Freya in return, Aesir don’t want that, Loki pipes up with making the arrangement a wager where to get Freya the mason has to build wall in impossible timeframe, Aesir and Mason agree, “no way he’ll ever do it”, “oh frick he’s actually doing it”, Aesir say they’ll kick Loki’s ass if he doesn’t do something about it
It really comes across as the gods completely using Loki as a scapegoat in that instance since they readily agreed to use his idea rather than it being something he did against their counsel

If I remember right, the worst thing he did was ask Zeus to marry Demeter's daughter, and marry her.
Then when Demeter threw a fit about it, he gave her back. But because he hadn't starved her daughter, she had to go back to Hades for 6 months out of the year.

I don't think Hades was actually portrayed as "evil" by the Greeks, most of that is Christian revisionism since he's associated with the Underworld thus Satan same as God has similar depictions as Zeus/Jupiter.

                Anonymous

Kind of a nice thought. You go to the underworld and you meet this super chill god who's like "Man can you believe all those buttholes up there? Haha. Enjoy your stay."

                Anonymous

It's a bit more complicated than that since the Underworld generally seemed to suck for anyone that wasn't a Hero that got to enter the exclusive Elysium Fields. Kinda the same deal with the Egyptian and Norse afterlives, if you weren't rich and powerful in life you got frick all after death. I think that's one of the main reasons Christianity exploded in popularity, it was the common man's afterlife.

There is an alternative reading of the story too, that suggests that Athena cursed her not to punish her for getting raped, but to give her the capacity to defend herself from it happening again.

            Anonymous

Doesn't gel that well with Athena then helping Perseus kill her afterwards.
The reading that Athena was doing Medusa a solid is modern.

'dusa before getting the name was a talisman usually used as household's guardian spirit

The mythification of Medusa as a personage part of the Perseus myth happened in the 900s-800s BC, depending on whether Hesiod compiled her story or came up with her himself.

In the 800sh years between Hesiod and Ovid (who did not give her the snake pubes, but did have her a be human woman), Medusa was a demigod born of cthnonic titans. In either version Poseidon bangs her.
