Peach being a competent ruler works because to bounces off of Bowser's character shift, since Mario needs to remain the almost-always-smiling everyman. The mainline 3D games are the only ones nowadays that keep up the "Bowser kidnaps her because he wants to marry her" cliche, since they're not as story-driven.

You can't prove your point because it is a Mario movie. We can not change that, nor do we know what would happen if it wasn't.

2023 has been a weird year. Nearly every movie has had a catastrophic opening weekend, but they've stuck around earning a million dollars here and there for weeks or months on end. The Little Mermaid was a massive failure when it opened, but has since managed to claw from "bomb" to "flop" to "disappointment" before eventually making it all the way to "profitable". It un-flopped in a way few movies did.

Even Elemental, Pixar's biggest flop of all time, is up to 313 million now. It made 3 million dollars in the US yesterday. It's not profitable yet, but it's getting within striking distance of at least breaking even.

I'm really surprised Elemental has clawed its way up in recent weeks.

              Actual midwit response.
Your argument is literally that if the core appeal of the movie were removed, it wouldn't have made money.

That is a moronic non-criticism. It's as moronic as saying "well, if Michael Jordan couldn't walk, then he wouldn't be a good basketball player!" or "W-Well, if you replaced Frozen's songs with vuvuzela horns, it wouldn't have done good," or "Well, if Avatar didn't have visuals, it wouldn't have made money!" Yeah, no shit. You figured out that there's something that draws people to a movie. You've done the most basic of observations, presumably while sitting in your parents' car in the Walmart parking lot, ceasing your window-licking infrequently to shout at some poor passing children "THA MARIO MOVIE HATH MARIO IN IT!"

And Mario is just…whimsical. Like, Zelda has a certain “era” feeling to it, swords and arrows and magic and faeries and dragons and castles. Same with basically anything else. But Mario is like…dudes in overalls, and turtles and mushrooms and ghosts and gorillas and dinosaurs and princesses and sentient bombs and skeletons…and everything is designed like a Japanese mascot, every character has personality and charm in their design, honed over 30+ years. Even without taking any cinematic risks whatsoever, it’s a fun and whimsical world to visit for 90 minutes.
