Because underneath the pretense of writing ideal super paragons for people who want a nerds viewpoint of a perfect world with good people, writers are still the shallow nerds with self insert wishes they were the bad boys in school and were generally popular with scoring chicks, a more ironic statement that they are just lying to themselves and believe deep down, buttholes are more heroes to them than actual goodie two shoes. A question as old as human civilization. I think it was mainly because of the decision to make Wolverine the protagonist. We need our main character to be cool, badass and "alpha", so let's have a character be estabilished as important, then make Wolverine walk all over him, humiliate him, be superior in every way, and don't forget cuck him (because that's really mature). You estabilish a stuck-up nerd with no personality and just acts like a pain in the ass so that you can build your protagonist around tearing the him down. Scummy as Hell in my opinion, specially considering the character assassination necessary to make this work.
