      /thread.

Yeah, you're stronger, faster, bigger, don't get periods, but it's women who live in easy mode. Imagine being such a fricking failure as a man that you think this. How pathetic you have to be to blame women for your frick ups. Just have a nice day.

Literal fricking moron. They do live one easy mode cause by their reproductive and intercourse capabilities, they are inherently the most valuable people in society bar none. An ugly woman can snatch a decent looking chap and form a good life for herself. An ugly man's life is a complete hell on earth. You've clearly drank the cool aid or just are far gone.

Men face danger every fricking day. Women are coddled, ergo, it's more tense seeing someone on easy mode get their shit pushed in.

What should a man do? Does the hero of the film need to go and impale himself on the cleaver of a murderous maniac in order to meet the wishes of the viewer?

If the guys runs away screaming like a woman, he's an annoying homosexual. Simple as. Audiences subconsciously know that a real man would protect his close ones. That's why nearly all slashers feature a "final girl" instead.
A horror film starring a man needs a villain that can't be easily beat up physically. The Thing does it right.

Hmm okay these are good. So what makes these work? Could something like Halloween or The Exorcist work with a male protagonist?

          >Could something like Halloween or The Exorcist work with a male protagonist?
          The Exorcist definitely.
Halloween maybe. I think Laurie being so innocent and vulnerable is part of what makes it so effective. As others have said if it was a dude and he was constantly screaming or running away from Michael Myers the audience would probably hate him because they'd subconsciously see him as a weak coward.

Ultimately im worried if you make it a guy, writers will make them meek like a child, or feminine like a woman, essentially writing the male as a female anyway.
I think if make horror is gonna work, especially for something like Halloween, it needs to tap into male ideals. Instead of running away from Micheal like a scared b***h, our male protagonist is attempting to maintain Micheal, maybe Micheal is an older brother he's been protective of. It just needs to tap into masculine means of fear, what does a man fear, not being able to provide or protect, is something that comes to mind.

The writers have to be more clever in constructing the story when using a male protagonist because people have an expectation that men must be more capable, resourceful and they aren't allowed to be cowards.

This, males are always somewhat expendable by default. Why they have to do things to be regarded while a female just has to not be a completely horrible person (and could be that if they are physically attractive).

Yeah, you're stronger, faster, bigger, don't get periods, but it's women who live in easy mode. Imagine being such a fricking failure as a man that you think this. How pathetic you have to be to blame women for your frick ups. Just have a nice day.

A woman lost in the woods hunted by a bear is horror

The same script with a few gendered beats is an survival story

"Final girl" is bullshit, most of the time even the slashers with a female protagonist end with one of the male characters surviving as well.

yea but the male character usually dies trying to save her or turns out to be the killer as well

Not even close, watch more slashers. It's only true for the first few movies that kicked off the genre. Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Black Christmas, Halloween, Friday 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street. People only remember those and think all the future slasher films played out the exact same way (they didn't, not even within those franchises).

I think it's because horror movies only work against female characters or men of certain dispositions.
If you tried to make a horror movie with a regular man who wasn't afraid of anything it'd quickly become either an action movie or a comedy.
Like the monster appears at the end of a corridor and the man instead of posturing himself for defense just charges it instead (I reckon about 30-odd% of men are stalwart/reckless like this), and either immediately gets chomped or starts beating the monster up which turns it into a comedy.

Movies can never really represent reality for reasons like this.
