Millennials are fond of Garfield the same way boomers are fond of Peanuts, as a witty relic of their childhoods, even despite their later commercialization.

Zoomers like Garfield ironically, as per usual. As a safe, innocuous property that can be skewed in numerous ways for humor.

In my experience it’s just a complete abstract sense of lol irony. There is no genuine meaning or affection. It’s just this pure ironic memetic socialization.

Why does anyone likes garfield? The comics weren't good, neither were the cartoons, none of them. Yet garfield has existed for like 40 years for no reason at all. Even back then it has have to be out of pure irony.

He was ubiquitous in their formative years and is a relatively simple concept to get
Fat cat is lazy and pessimistic
    Dog is eager and optimistic
    John is.....John
Nobody genuinely sinks their teeth into Garfield
Nobody marathons Garfield comics and keeps an up to date database on Garfield lore
Nobody ranks top 10 funniest Garfield strips
Garfield is simply Garfield and its conception as an admittedly cynical attempt at making a marketable character first, actual quality entertainment second reinforces why zoomers love this fat orange cat so much
Garfield is nothing pretentious, Garfield is Garfield

zoomers like it because they can be detached and ironic about it. Garfield has the same appeal to zoomers that Family Guy or SpongeBob does, meme fodder.

I don't think that's true for SpongeBob, many of us grew up watching it so we have an attachment to it. Many of the memes that come from SpongeBob are based on the show and its characters or they match the feeling of the show's humor or the show's art. Peter Griffen saying "You stupid Black person" while playing COD does not really have anything to do with the show and is only funny because a popular cartoon character said Black person while playing COD.

I liked him before all the horror shit and as a kid had a bunch of the books and dvd specials during a time where I only cared to watch cartoons and play videos.
