Why do people hate her?
I was told “ugh, Betty is the worst!” by multiple people before starting the show. I’ve just started s5 and I’m still not seeing it. She’s obviously the victim in the situation.

They don’t? Because I was told to be prepared for her to be super annoying. All I’m seeing so far is a woman who was a loving and devoted wife whose husband emotionally neglected her and cheated on her, and she’s having a hard time coping with it.

She's emotionally immature, which is hardly her fault, but it makes her annoying
She acts like a child but so do all women. She's actually the most realistic woman in the show.

They think she used Henry, and they think she’s a bad mom to Sally and Bobby.
She abused her children, and cooked shitty 60's food.

Don has a pattern with women. His wives are childish, petulant, submissive, and dependent, but his mistresses are what people call strong, independent women. He never truly opens up to the former, but can’t get truly intimate with the latter. So Betty and Megan are annoying in the sense that they are immature. They aren’t bad at all, they just never had the proper upbringing to make them proper grown ups. Both are preppy models from well-educated families. Both have no female siblings and mommy issues, which made them narcissistic.
His mistresses always end up with pathetic betas (surprisingly many are israeli kek) whom they dominate and manipulate, so Don acts as an erotic release to them, someone they can relax around while he is in control. However, that release quickly fizzles out and both parties get tired of the constant risks and frick ups.
All in all, all of Don’s women are a reflection of his shitty upbringing and his inability to form a bond with a well-adjusted woman. It’s always either an overgrown child or a manipulative quasi-man. I love this show for these extremely well-written characters like Don or Roger, because their relationships aren’t just there to move the plot forward. Everything they do tells you more about what didn’t happen on-screen than what did.

I haven't seen the show in a few years, but I recall her being kind of greedy, selfish, and a bad mother.
She never changes either, I think there's an episode where Sally starts bleeding g from.her hatchet wound and Betty is happy because it means Sally won't he spending time with Don's new (admittedly a dumb prostitute) wife.
Don't hate her, but she's not a good person and doesn't try to be, which is probably the point.

Most women Don hooked up with when he cheated on Betty happened to be 10000 times worse looking than his actual wife. This show made no fricking sense
A hot 35 year old woman can't compete with an ugly 20 year old woman.
Cheating in your wife is more about just wanting something new, not better.
