Why do people like Darkseid?
I just don't see the appeal, yet it seems like people legitimately give a shit about this character, and get mad when you even slightly suggest he's not the bestest thing ever.
And no, "Morrison" and “DARKSEID IS" are not acceptable answers.

He didn't introduce any new or complex ideas so he's not really particularly influential.
Most of what people think that was introduced by Star Wars was actually copied from the Fourth World like the Source/Force, an entire pseudo religious philosophy to justify being the most evil and 2 dimensional possible and Vader vs Luke relationship so it was quite influential as long as you consider Star Wars influential.
Star Wars went through so many drafts and changes that you could say that just about everything that inspired it holds equal weight. It's as much Fourth World as it is Hidden Fortress, Buck Rogers, and Tora, Tora, Tora.

Kirby's work is what makes him perennial. There he's more than just a generic overlord, he has explicit motivations and personal quirks that round him out and make him a compelling part of the saga of the New Gods. But a lot of modern adaptations cut out all the other New Gods and try to make him yet another generic overlord for Superman to punch.

Because he's the ultimate bad guy. Not a shred of good will, extremely powerful, not a moustache-twirling kind of guy. He's just badass. The times i don't like him is when they make him into a brawler that gets into fisticuffs with random people and adheres to the Worf Effect for dramatic purposes. I don't even like him as much when he gets into it with Superman because to me, he's a villain that should be only defeated by the hero's wits and resolve, not by brute force. He should be unmatched in a physical contest.

I never got the hype from the Kirby stories. Nothing that put Darkseid above any other cosmic villain, at least.
