Why do people like Oswald so much?

I'm not saying Oswald is a bad character or anything. Infact, he's great!

Its just that; he's practically a beta mickey mouse. I mean really hes not all that different from the other Disney cartoon characters.

Is it really because of Epic Mickey? The history? Or because it's the hipster choice?

He's the ultimate underdog (rabbit) story. He got screwed out of all the success that Mickey would eventually get, but despite that he proverbially keeps trying to claw his way back up.

On top of that he has a personality, something Mickey gradually lost for the most part once he just became the face of Disney. He's also a chad who loves his wife and fricks her every day

That is true. Oswald may be poor as shit and literally lives in the cartoon equivalent of the ghetto, but he still fricks more then the average millionaire. Bugs bunny probably hasn't claimed a b***h as hard as Ozzy has.

In a way, Oswald is the true winner here. Really, mickeys story is a cautionary tale of becoming the biggest. All the genuine soul and personality mickey once had has disappeared, and now lays in the abyss of time. But unlike mickey, Oswald never got the chance to be gutted and turned into a hollow shell. He truly is the most humble Disney character to live with there souls intact.

Well, in any case, it's up to the people now to give mickey his character again (this is after the horror movie phase that all public domain characters get in now for some reason.)

The original Disney-produced cartoons are mostly available on YouTube, except for the lost media.

and they hold up pretty well. This one's from The Fox Chase. https://youtu.be/sOSCM58xT5Y

Oswald didn't get gutted by Disney, but Universal kept making Oswald cartoons after Disney left, and there were changes, and by 1935 he was totally unrecognizable. but nobody pays attention to those years.

I have noticed though that Disney likes to use the lucky rabbit theme song in he parks. Which is strange because that song was made when universal owned and controlled Oswald. I guess that was also included in the deal.

Also by 1935 everyone who made Lantz's Oswald good went to Warner Bros, namely Virgil Ross, Sid Sutherland and most importantly of all Tex Avery.

I thought it was because of Donald's relatable personality, his entertaining cartoons, and the beloved comic series, including the whole world of duckberg and it's cast of iconic characters, including the other side of Donald being the three caballeros?

Folks think Iger had big plans for the character after that PR stunt "tradeoff"

Yeah because ceos clearly care about art (let alone one specific character that nobody knew that well. It also definitely helped that Oswald wasn't apart of a big multi million dollar franchise.)

      Yep...Iger had "big" plans.

Epic Mickey was the big plan for the trade. Well, that and projecting a "I care about the Disney legacy" image to Roy and Diane.

I mean, they clearly did. They wanted to (and maybe still want to given Speedstorm) make him their video game mascot starting with Epic Mickey. The second one making him co-main character was meant to transition to him eventually taking reigns himself but after they performed poorly the whole thing was dropped and they didn’t have an idea what to do for a decade. That was a lot of effort and money put into those games

Furries and people who like the idea of him. in fact he was never that funny and Mickey had better writing and animation (writing was a thing even in 1920)

Well really that's my thing though. He is JUST a beta mickey mouse. Yet whenever I tell people that, they really don't like that, and try to pass him off as better, because...just because, OK ANON?!

I actually don't think he's writing is bad. For the time it was pretty good. Of course mickey had better writing due to him being an evolution from the idea of Oswald. But again, don't tell people that, mickey is only a evil mouse we use in anti Disney shit or whatever.

Most people are introduced via Epic Mickey and Oswald has a better writing and personality there then Mickey has had in at least 60 years, but probably ever
Let’s not pretend the interest is still in cartoons from 1928, both have developed beyond that. Oswald developed better

That's because the heirs of Zorro and Tarzan are sitting on the trademark and demand that any attempt at adaptation go through the Estate for approval. That's why Tarzan was exiled from Kingdom Hearts, Disney was sick of paying the Edgar Rice Burroughs estate for further usage of him.

What's cooler about it? It's a pretty cute design. Real hug able and all. But its not all that different from anything else you would see from Disney after.

The animation helps a lot, but saying old Disney animation is good is like saying oxygen helps keep the human race alive.

Honestly...I can relate bro. The more that I think about it, Oswalds ears would be really cool to see flowing in the wind. I can imagine a precision platformer with dmc styled combat having his hears flow with your moves....

Frick I want a Oswald game now. He's in public domain now, so they better get on with it.

Also, mickeys gloves are cute. I think Disney should try too make him more of a dorky guy. I think it would work.

It's a typical case of wanting what you can't have. If Walt had never lost Oswald and Oswald had been part of Mickey's regular crew from the beginning, he'd be unremarkable.

The main problem is the only two Disney stays relatively consistent on personality wise is Donald & Goofy. Mickey/Minnie/Daisy have either 0 personality or they change depending on the iteration. Makes it hard to give a frick.

If they could stick with a personality for Oswald and commit to it, might have better luck.

You have to wonder how it’s had such a stranglehold when there’s quite a alot of inconsistent, bland characters
Do Donald and Goofy pull that much weight?

        Anonymous

        Yes they do.

The goofy shorts in the 50s introduced this more relatable side too goofy. Making him more of an average/family man. Then goof troop in the 90s solidified he's family man persona with Max. His character was truly earnest and true, despite his wavering intelligence. And of course I don't really need to bring up the goofy movies. They have been talked about too death.

Donald is also a fairly well written character. He's quick temper and bad luck is something people can find relatable. You see this throughout most of his older cartoons. Plus, let's all be frank, kids like to laugh at characters misery. Alot of these aspects alone is a strong reason why Donald is so much more popular then Mickey. But I think for him specifically, what really sells Donald is the things that have spun out from him. The three caballeros was pretty popular back in the day. José and Panchito bounce of Donald very well, and on there own they can stand pretty well. But more importantly, Donald's popularity spawned duckberg and all of its characters. That's a whole other thing at this point, and even though Donald in the original show wasn't really important, in the reboot and comics, Donald built his own character that made him so much more then just a relatable cartoon character.

Yes. Too add on too this, we should always try to refrain the couple from arguing. Try to make Oswald and Ortensia people who really do love each other. Ortensia never lets Oswalds emotion first philosophy get too her. And Oswald can be the overly defense, overly protective boyfriend archetype.
