Was anyone here posting on message forums when King of the Hill was airing? I remember posting on places like ToonZone and it wasn't uncommon to see posts like, "Why is this show animated? They could've just made it live-action if they were going to use this art style."
I think that mentality still exists. Not just for weird animation purists who think you need to use the visual medium to its full surreal potential, but also for budgeting purposes. If you aren't going to take full advantage of animation by doing crazy things, you could've made your show on 1/6th the budget. I've always disagreed and think you should be allowed to tell any story, no matter how grounded, with animation. But I think this mentality-- which is both practical-driven and purist-driven-- is precisely why so many people will not even consider animation if they just want to "tell a story about a normal family".
The only exception is if they want to make a HYPER cheap TV show and with a Family Guy art style and Toonboom rigs.

The thing is not everything NEEDS to be high art, not everything needs to be some emotional Toy Story 3-esque roller coaster where every character has a tragic backstory on top of twenty dramatic sad moments that just bog down what could otherwise be a fun movie. Not everything is going to be a masterpiece. Some times movies can just be fun and light. Something you enjoy watching on a Saturday while you clean around the house.

Since Super Mario Bros 2 (US), Peach has been shown to have athletic ability. She still is the damsel because Bowser overpowers her and she has to give herself in. Why would other characters besides Mario and Luigi say Mamma Mia? No other characters are Italian Americans from Brooklyn. Peach is human(?) but grew up in the Mushroom Kingdom. It's not a movie, it's a video game you don't get to play. If you recognize it as a series of cutscenes and levels, it is so much better. As a movie, it's a shitty movie.
People throw the word "honest" and "forced" at everything these days without thinking it twice but I feel like The Super Mario Bros. Movie is genuinely honest. It's very clear about what it is, what it offers and there's almost no attempt to break the boundaries of it's premise. It's not great cinema (plays too safe in my opinion) but is neat and satisfying which is a good thing for a videogame adaptation.
