They have to work harder to earn the same level of respect normal people get. So some become jaded by the circumstances that they have no influence on, thus finding other ways to earn respect. Possibly in the less moral spectrum, because that's sometimes easier.
Imagine literally just being born and the world hates you and everyone thinks you're ugly and laughs at you and emasculates you. You did nothing to deserve it, you literally just exist and your existence is pain. Why would you not want to make others suffer like you have? When you compare the bad actions of these characters it pales in comparison to the things they've been through.
