I've heard from others that a possible reason for the confusion with Tomino dialogue is that he writes a slightly antiquated Japanese.
I guess it would be kinda like having a movie come out today where the people talk like they're from the 60s.

Tomino says that Char's last line at the end of the first Gundam episode about the mistakes of youth made everyone confused at the production, some even blaming the series lack of success during the first run to that specific line. They do. Simple google images search shows tons of things using the phrase. It's basic Japanese, dekinai-kun.
The first two images are completely unrelated to the phrase in question. None of the others seem rhetoric either (they're mostly asking the readers).
