Why do you think audiences ended up liking SpongeBob more than CatDog?

Why do you think audiences ended up liking SpongeBob more than CatDog? Nickelodeon was really hoping for CatDog to be the next Ren and Stimpy or Rugrats level hit for them and then the year after CatDog came out, SpongeBob started airing and became Nick's biggest hit

I'm not complaining, i'm just curious. Hell, I love SpongeBob a LOT more than CatDog, since the positive nature of SpongeBob appeals to me more. I know CatDog is supposed to be a mean-spirited show (Even the theme song hints at that) and that's fine, but it's just not my thing

    >Old logo

Brings me back to the early days, kind of sad they redesigned the logo after the movie.

Exactly because of the reasons in your second paragraph. SpongeBob was just a more fun show that clicked with both kids and adults.

Even as a kid catdog creeped me out a little. Spongbob took a long time to get into creepy territory.

Spongebob's just more fun/positive. CatDog, from what I vaguely remember, dipped into drama more.

Catdog is a freak in-universe that brings disgust to nearly everyone who interacts with them, so I found them much more relatable than Spongebob.

Most of the Bikini Bottomites don’t like SpongeBob either and find him naive and annoying. The only people that like him and tolerate him are Sandy and Patrick.

Yeh but the audience isn’t annoyed by SpongeBob, it’s not even like most people really hate SpongeBob, his energy is just too much to them/he does stuff that justifies them being pissed

It sounds autistic when put this way, but compared to other gross out shows Catdog made the audiences uncomfortable because the episodes would often delve into some depraved shit without any punchline. You had shit like Dog becoming this muscular DeviantArt hulk, cat becoming mentally moronic, or having to turn himself inside out to clean Dog's teeth. Internally, no one wanted to work on Catdog, and that leaked onto the show itself. Basically if Ren and Stimpy was someone performing slapstick comedy, CatDog was someone slicing their wrists in a stage, smearing blood all over themselves and screaming "LAUGH AT MEEEEE" while everyone watching doesn't laugh.
There was just something about it that turned even the most autistic of cartoon fans off from it at the time. It was just "too far"

Catdog really is the best example of how the opposite of love isn’t hate but apathy. Sure the brothers might have a moment now and again but generally they’re at odds and it’s usually caused by how the brothers generally don’t account for their others wants or needs, triple that with how the greasers, winslow and the townsfolk genuinely didn’t give a frick about them but especially not cat.

catdog was mean as frick. every character except dog was mean as shit. winslow especially makes no sense for him to be mean since he adopted them, fed them, paid for their education (both catdog have college degrees), allows them to stay in HIS house, drive his car etc.

Austistic as frick but my favorite episode is the one where Winslow gets a girlfriend but the next she robs his ass blind literally just because she could and is reduced to tears over it and the audience is supposed to feel bad for him. On one hand, nah lmao get fricked rat but at the same time, like damn can nobody can ever just be happy on this show?

    >catdog: most of the episodes resolve around a grumpy cat and a positive dog who are literally forced to live in the same body, creating frusterating situations
    >ren and stimpy: the main character is a grump and his friend is a moron, once again creating frusterating situations
    >rugrats: literally unwatchable past the age of 10, you'll get called weird for liking it
    >spongebob: main character is happy all the time, there's nothing frusterating about the show, first season patrick is smart and the drama doesn't soley come from dumb characters fricking shit up
I can see why kids liked it

Spongebob, especially earlier seasons, is REALLY well written to appeal to a more mature audience, despite the nautical nonsense catering to children watching. It's kind of weird to look back on and think of it as a kids show, but it had some jokes that you look back on even today and think "Wow that's actually kind of clever".
Looking at an episode from the perspective of a writer and not a general audience, it's really hard to say "I woulda written the same thing" to most jokes or gags. Sure some jokes write their self, but even a joke that doesn't really hit (unless you REALLY get it) like "You mean she 'puts on airs??, that's just fancy talk" are really good writing quirks that make the series. It's quotable, and I guess that's what make it memorable?

Even as a kid I thought Catdog was a bit too gross and mean-spirited. Spongebob was light, fun, and I'll still look back on early season quotes fondly.

Spongebob was funny. Ren and Stimpy was a bit before my time yet I still remember more jokes from that than I do CatDog despite the latter being my generation.

comedy is based in suffering, but there's a limit to the amount of suffering that can still be funny. cat dog crosses over that more often than early sponge bob, that bit where crabs and squidward send spongebob to pick up a special spatula is a variation of the left handed hammer joke, like the "FETCH THE BREASTPLATE STRETCHER!" joke that asoiaf fans bring up. a classic one in all professions. it's just a bit of ribbing on new hires, it might go back to vaudeville.
catdog is an artist trying to make a stoges bit with a bit more viscera.

To be fair, a lot of the Nicktoons from 1997-2000 weren’t very good.
