Pretty bad although the premise could have been more interesting.

It's supposed to be a commentary on the stoic assassin type, but it doesn't lean into the parody aspect hard enough so it's just a really weird boring movie where the guy is actually kinda ok at his job and it ends up still being a boring stoic assassin movie.

Spot on. I was expecting a Fincher masterpiece but instead got an overly long and kind of boring movie that lacked identity.
Was it a parody? was it serious? No twists and a predictable plot. I would have never guessed that Fincher directed this if I didn't know before.
I feel cheated because the Fincher/Fassbender combo had so much potential.

It's pretty good. The opening is great. Fassbender does very much with very little, his lack of expressing was fun rather than boring. It was a much better movie of the hitman games than the two actual adaptions. The pacing was slow and there wasn't a lot of action which was refreshing and exciting in its own right.

For the first 10 or so minutes I was extremely bored. But then I realized, this guy is meant to be a cringy moron and the movie is a comedy. Then I started laughing at everything that happened and it was immensely enjoyable. The scene where he goes to kill a guy and gets his ass absolutely beaten and just barely makes it out of there alive, and then he breaks into this 'im such a badass, this is what it takes to be as much of a badass as me, etc.' monologue to himself as he limps away, I haven't laughed that hard in weeks.

I think it's a riddle. Every kill is a challenge to the application of your system. Killing Dolores is a challenge to your empathy, for example. The Brute I imagine has to do with physical sacrifice.

But The Client and The Expert elude me. I could say that killing the client would open a can of worms and the risk was too great, but before he leaves he asks him a question that must relate to the reason for sparing his life.

And who is this guy by the way?

          Anonymous

No one. Killer's paranoia got the better of him but not getting on his connecting flight ensured the killers missed him at home.

I think it's related to Affairs of State. He was probably watching him throughout the job in Paris to recruit him for the Agency. The intro has a series format, I believe they had plans to expand the story which may be currently under evaluation. I guess this movie can be considered a pilot at the same time.

I really think the only problem with The Killer is how the story was originally going to be a series. They try to disguise it but the way the story is edited gives it away.

Yes, it's a linear episodic narrative that resembles a comic, the source comprises several books so I wonder if it's the entire saga or just a specific arc.
It's important to see the narrative as a project devised by the killer and brought to completion under his own terms rather than a typical revenge flick.

I mean look at this and tell me this is not for a tv series.

This would make sense as to why the pacing was weird.
This movie wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. Something was....off. Fincher doesn't miss and I wouldn't be surprised if israeliteflix started meddling with his project too much

              Anonymous

Probably his relationship with Netflix is not good. He wanted to make a series, Netflix didn't give him enough freedom so Fincher said "ok, let's finish this deal fast" and just cut as much as he could. The Killer was is his passion project I hope that if he goes to Amazon or Paramount he can do what he actually wants to do with the IP.

I thought it was comfy. I didn't really get the "he's supposed to look like a moron" angle, I saw it more like he coulnd't handle messing up the hit so the rest of the movie is him fricking up but pretending he's in control.

I think he reacts to things that happen around him that are out of his calculation because all the murders were out of his calculation in the first place. He has to kill his boss, the assistant, a guy from florida, etc.

The fact that the main character doesn't die makes the entire movie a moral dead end, on the one hand you're cheering for him, but the fact that he commits all these objectively horrible acts, the movie implies that those sorts of things are ok so long as you do it in a really cool and well-thought out way. It's not as if he actually lives up to any sort of code either (e.g. Scarface: "no women, no kids"), he mostly kills for self-preservation, which could be an interesting premise except sometimes he kills people totally on accident. It's great competency porn though, if you like criminals macgyvering bombs out of chewing gum, you'll get some enjoyment out of it, I sure did. It's like No Country for Old Men if it were entirely about Anton Chigurh and Chigurh was really really boring.

          >the only discussion these threads ever have are whether or not the character was meant to be taken seriously or not

When the discussion tries to define whether the protagonist is a parody or not I think that is a problem. Why does David Fincher have problems with projects on Netflix? Mindhunter S2 had serious production problems too and clearly The Killer went through a heavy re-edit to make it a film.

Again, you're too stupid to realize how absurd it is to assume companies--particulatly netflix- would spend a dime "shilling" anything on Cinemaphile.
Your provincial low IQ makes it hard for you to understand the otherwise obvious. That's why you assume the only discussion about the movie is whether the character is meant to be taken "seriously"- the type of autistic cluelessness that also shows how out of touch you are.

netflix would never spend 30 cents an hour to hire rajesh to market their movies. especially when their annual budget for marketing is nearly 2 billion dollars. they just wouldn't do this on one of the most influential and trafficked websites in the united states!

I think something that happened mid-production is that they got cold feet to show the protagonist as incompetent in order to challenge him.

It's like when you compare Batman Begins and The Batman when Bruce Wayne makes mistakes. There are mistakes that look good or are redeemable. There are others that don't.

The first part is practically perfect. It builds up to the climax, where the protagonist shoots at the target. The narrative is impeccable and enjoyable throughout the film but it is in the work in Paris where it reaches its best lines.

Good narration is not a plot point. The script and the direction in Paris are solid. The editing while listening to the narrator is tight. It transmits the monotony of a waiting predator but also the stakes and danger at the end of the job are perceivable.

                >it's a try hard edgy slog made by an over the hill has been who lost his touch and ends up coming across as cynical and dull

it was actually a very self aware movie and Fincher was making fun of

I agree with this anon. I was immediately hooked. The narration and his demeanor was the good kind of slow and calm. It built tension really well, seeing and hearing the repetitiveness of his job was refreshing and intriguing.

                >hearing the repetitiveness of his job was refreshing

I don't know about refreshing but it puts you mentally in a state of constant focus and attention, just like the MC the fact that the narrative is happening in real time like Nicky Santoro in Casino adds to the tension. That's why I believe that every killing is a challenge against his code, that he recites like a mantra.

it felt very off and not well made, which is compounded by the fact it was made by such a talent like fincher
it was a big miss from him and that's ok, there's no need to blindly defend a bad film from a great director

It serves as an introduction to the main character, his principles, his vision of life and his methodology. If you like existentialist heroes like Le Samourai or The Driver from Drive, this is dessert. The wait for the goal doesn't get boring because it's a chance to get to know the character better and the script doesn't let up at any point, everything he's thinking about is entertaining, in one way or another.

Then the target appears and the audience is as excited as he is to execute the assassination. Then you have the surprise but is not subversion, it's the factor that starts the plot for movie.

You can define it as subversion, I'll grant you that, but it's not the main goal of the move, it's not so much to shock the audience, which it does, of course, as it is to set the rest of the story in motion.
