While the most culturally meaningful Godzilla films do this, there are plenty of Japanese Godzilla films that are just monsters fighting with a tacked-on "protect environment good" message. There is more than one kind of Godzilla movie, and the "meaningless" ones helped define an entire genre of TV that helped introduce guest directors of what would usually be very adult-oriented films to young, would-be superstars, in addition to simply being a massive part of domestic pop culture in and of itself.

Godzilla is the American war machine, the monster leviathan that bestrides the world as colossus. It's right and natural for Americans to identify with the beast in large part. The Japanese themselves make the transition from Godzilla as the enemy firebomber and nuker of Japanese cities in proxy-WW2, to Godzilla as Japan's friend and ally who defends Nippon from the other monsters of the world.
Where are the Japanese movies showing the rape of Nanking and the war in Manchuria. How come the US makes more anti our own government and military media than Japan? The Japanese play the victim because muh nukes and firebombings.
Japan suffered greatly in the war and defeat, and it's a far more compelling and interesting story because it involved a fall from height, the mighty brought low who must learn to stand again in light of the destruction of their material life and ideological world. A movie about China in WW2 is just torture porn, there's nothing interesting about being the whipping boy who is whipped over and over again.
Japan's inward turn is a consquence of being isolated from the world under occupation until 1952, no Japanese could travel overseas and they were preoccupied with their own rebuilding and suffering, mainly just finding a meal amonsgt mass malnutrition and starvation into the early 50s. If Chinese or others think they have interesting stories to tell about WW2 then let them tell them.

It's called The Human Condition trilogy, it was released in 1959, it's 9 hours in total and it's a masterpiece.

Old Godzilla films had a charm between the low budget VFX they had and the amount of passion and love put into them. Tokusatsu is a very specific kind of technique.
Modern Hollywood Godzilla movies are just generic action flicks from Hollywood. No different than any Marvel movie. There's no charm at all.

Introspection is a rare trait but that's what you need to enjoy messages with deeper meaning. Deeper meaning is simply substituted with identity politics and virtue signaling. Hollywood caters to the majority that values instant gratification above all else. Hence big CGI spectacle after big CGI spectacle. There is no money in meaning.
