It's astounding to me that Disney thinks anyone today will even like their 70 year old movies. They're not good or interesting, they're just what we HAD.
It's a little more complicated than that. They can never retain the rights to the public domain version, this is true. But they hold legal copyright over THEIR version, thus their copyright ownership over films like Cinderella. Making a sequel doesn't suddenly give them legal rights to the public domain character that is Bambi but it DOES give them legal rights to the characters in their 1942 and 2006 film. The copyright expiring on the book doesn't negate their ownership of their adaptation.
So tl;dr the book is in public domain as of 2022, but the 2006 sequel to the Disney movie is not. I don't think the 1942 film is either. Sequels are made to get their cash cow off of popular and nostalgic films, but it can also retain a larger bulk of ownership rights. Disney doesn't really care who owns Cinderella, or Bambi, or really anything they made a movie based on anyways--just that they retain ownership over their adaptations.
I may have expressed my point poorly in my original post, sorry if that's the case.
after that mythical modern moviegoer he can drop 10 bucks on a latte and gluten free cresant'e , *They* can certainly see our brand of pasturized slop as a fair investment
They should make bambi's mother black, and instead of burning to death in a forest fire, she can jump into a river to avoid the fire. Then she can drown because she can't swim. You can have that one for free, Disney.
because disney is creatively bankrupt

Apparently they are taking out the single memorable scene where his mom gets shot.
100% chance they'll make Flower gay and please the porcupine autist.
I can live with that
ZAMN!
Correct but that's not the reason
It's getting a remake because Disney wants to retain the legal rights
That is not how copyrights or trademarks work
You can’t just make a remake about something in public domain and call dibs

Ronno looks tired because he stays up all night looking at the hunters who sleep naked in their tents.

It doesn't need one

>Bambi's mother is voiced by a black woman.
>Her model, for no good reason, has steatopygia sculpted onto it.
