Off the top of my head I can think of the tv show Arrested Development, which was tanked on purpose by a Fox executive who didn’t like it
The Iron Giant was given no marketing in order to make it fail to justify closing down the animation studio that made it
Norm MacDonald’s movie Dirty Work was banned from advertising on NBC, simply due to an executive having personal Al beef with him
Nightwing comes are constantly screwed with cause Dan Didio doesn’t like him
It’s not uncommon, I just want to know who at DC hates Superman, why they do, and what can be done about it
If they put out any thing that’s at least a 6/10 (movie, show, video game etc) and it was unpopular than id tend to agree
But most Superman products have be awful even by comic book standards
People are tired of Superman subversions(how many times has the "Superman, but bad!' story been don now?), and modern writers don't understand how to write anything that isn't subversive of something that already exists, so they don't actually know what to do with him anymore.
Because he's a garbage character. People don't want to concede to this but he has nothing going for him
He's too overpowered for his setting [that being metropolitan America] and he has only 2 people in the entire universe that can meaningfully contest him that being >Doomsday >Darkseid
And that's literally it. Superman literally shits on everyone else.
Weebshit tends to make overpowered characters like him but tend to make him likeable by making it clear they trained for their powers, but Superman didnt train, hes powerful because hes a bullshit plant man and photosynthesis makes him more powerful
Even fricking Thor has to be train to become stronger, Superman is just bullshit OP because he is
>le uncreative, thought-terminating-meme-spouting casual has arrived
Next, tell us how Batman isn't solving any real issues by punching criminals, and how he should instead donate some of his money.
What the frick are you talking about? I'm saying Superman is boring because he oneshots 99% of his enemies and there's almost nobody in his own setting that is a meaningful threat to him
Batman can't oneshot the Joker and is physically inferior to a shit ton of his own villain's catalogue like Bane and Croc, and has actually trained for his strength unlike getting power from magic photosynthesis
>What the frick are you talking about?
You're a casual who spouts thought-terminating memes. You literally prove it in the next sentence: >I'm saying Superman is boring because he oneshots 99% of his enemies and there's almost nobody in his own setting that is a meaningful threat to him
I also called you uncreative because you think the only story is one where Superman gets beaten down. You're also uncreative for thinking that there are no other characters to be invented/used wisely for an adversary. Hell, that puzzle lady is pretty neat, and she's not strong at all.
>I also called you uncreative because you think the only story is one where Superman gets beaten down.
Those are the stories that audiences find appealing you fricking moron, 'Growth through struggle' is the cornerstone of all good writing. >You're also uncreative for thinking that there are no other characters to be invented/used wisely for an adversary.
You can but everyone's gonna renember the bullshit overpowered Superman in the back of their head -- him being nigh-invincible is practically part of his identity -- and seeing him take Ls to random shmucks will come across as dumb writing
>I'm saying Superman is boring because he oneshots 99% of his enemies and there's almost nobody in his own setting that is a meaningful threat to him
What are you talking about?
Superman gets his shit pushed in on a weekly basis by some random villain.
>Superman is boring because he oneshots 99% of his enemies and there's almost nobody in his own setting that is a meaningful threat to him
Superman is mid tier in DC
Byrne nerfing Superman Post-Crisis was a good decision for Superman stories but a bad decision for the DCU. It turns him into just another superhero instead of the strongest, (arguably) cleverest, first and best.
Byrne basically made Superman into the boring character that people call him today. Superman was popular in the sixties, when he was allowed to be a sci-fi character with wacky concepts.

But haven't they written themselves into a corner with this, "morally perfect with a lack of ambition" stuff? Clark's so damn reactive now but rarely does it ever bite him in the ass because he knows what to do. He just kind of exists, and I can see why that'd be boring. Either go all-in with the OPness like Silver Age or find some way to generate conflict/doubt in his life. Focusing on a character designed *in universe* to be boring (Clark) sucks.

I've said it before, the only way to make Superman cool again is to throw out all the Byrne characterization and go back to Silver/Bronze-age style stories. Superman's no longer compelling to the public, the main draw has to be the rich, dense, loopy world-building of the comic's heyday. Jimmy is the best Superman POV character. Even Kirby knew it.
Modern comic book writers are a) Joss Wheeon wannabes or b) grew up as marvel drones
They basically can’t understand what made Superman popular since it’s not sassy or Superman punching Kirby monsters
Not too many modern writers can come close to the whimsy of Otto Binder or Pathos of Jerry Seigel.
Because you're a radicalized piece of shit that doesn't actually care about the values Supes stands for and are just b***hing to whine because you lack anything greater in your life
Mostly Batfans trying to look big, and summergays trying to sound tough and cool- and failing at both.
It's Superman. Peace and restraint are barely words to summergays who stop screaming at their playstations long enough to do some heavy reading by picking up a comic book. Superman doesn't reach people who tantrum like 2 year olds, but they buy the comic books anyway.
Hate? And what the frick do you like? You're on Cinemaphile, you frickers complain about everything, where's your room to talk? Dumb motherfricker, frick you.

>>"[Blank] is such a Braniac!"
Are you stupid enough to think Superman invented or coined the term "braniac", and that he wasn't named that because it was already a common term?
Hmm...
You gonna embarrass yourself anymore?
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/brainiac
>Gets mad
Yes, you do. But then again, you online geniuses are all mad, right? X-D
>No you can't use a dictionary to prove me wrong because....YOU JUST CAN'T OKAY
Seethe.
>is defeated by the weapon he first used
At least you tried. See you in the MCU threads, kid.
>Schizo doesn't realize he's debating multiple people, at least one of which is as stupid as himself.
Not the same guy.
Anon, I could just say
>Lying
to you, because my results showed '44 as the first year. I'm not sure Merriam's the greatest source for the first usage of a word, so I'm not certain either of us are right.
Regardless, it was Superman who first used it in the context of this genre we're talking about. No other characters were calling their abilities "superpowers" before Superman; that is the point.
>I don't trust the biggest dictionary in the World.
Okay.
>Regardless, it was Superman who first used it in the context of this genre we're talking about. No other characters were calling their abilities "superpowers" before Superman; that is the point.
Is it just more of your ignorant conjectures? You've already been debunked on 2 of your lies. So if you're going to move the goal post, you better be able to prove it this time.
>Is it just more of your ignorant conjectures? You've already been debunked on 2 of your lies.
What lies? Are you really going full phony right now? We got different search results, don't be a homosexual.
You didn't even know what the frick a mystery-man was before this thread, you don't know a thing about comics.
>What lies? Are you really going full phony right now? We got different search results, don't be a homosexual.
I did what any sane person would, that's to go to the dictionary where these things are documented.
>You didn't even know what the frick a mystery-man was before this thread, you don't know a thing about comics.
But I still know that superhero and superpower predate the Superman character. Which is enough to make you look like an ignorant gnat.
>But I still know that superhero and superpower predate the Superman character
But that's quite literally irrelevant to the discussion. We're talking about comics, anon. He was the first superhero--in comics. The first one to introduce the name superpowers--in comics.
>Moving the goal post.
Still waiting for your proof mate.
Known Use of superpower 1849,
>https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/superpower
Known Use of superhero 1899
>https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/superhero
But, were they calling the comics characters those names? If not, your point is moot; Superman still would've been the first superhero to use it. If you'd actually read the Phantom, you'd know he--and all costumed crimefighters of his age--were considered Mystery-Men, not superheroes.
Superman, amongst comics characters, was the birth of the superhero trope.
>World's First Superhero
Lol. Lmao, even. This homosexual doesn't even know what a Mystery-Man is.
You probably haven't read a single book from the Golden Age, have you?
>You probably haven't read a single comic, have you?
Fixed.
They literally actually do. Successful things get intentionally tanked due to spite all the time
No, they don't. Like what?
People don't set out to lose money. They can lose it due to incompetence, but it's not intentional.
Superman is outdated.
>Current
>2010
Motherfrickers are really using a 12 year old list and don't realize that what they're promoting is irrelevant.
Edgelords... we were robbed...
>its a supergirl shrinks down with the Atom to go inside superman's body
burn it.
>Last updated 2013
baka
orson scott bros.,, it was OUR TIME!
we were robbed too.
>Another 10 year old to-read list.
Not 1 good story in 10 years, huh?
My Hero Academia came out 8 years ago.
>My Hero Academia came out 8 years ago
Holy shit
No one hates Superman.
People are tired of Superman subversions(how many times has the "Superman, but bad!' story been don now?), and modern writers don't understand how to write anything that isn't subversive of something that already exists, so they don't actually know what to do with him anymore.
Popularity has always worked like this.
Growth -> Peak -> Decline -> Subversion -> Growth -> Peak -> Decline -> Dead
>why yes, I don't judge a cape character for its live action movies, how did you know?
damn that's what jorge jimenez looks like?
what a chad

you guys are obsessed
just do more Superman TAS tbh
Because he's a garbage character. People don't want to concede to this but he has nothing going for him
He's too overpowered for his setting [that being metropolitan America] and he has only 2 people in the entire universe that can meaningfully contest him that being
>Doomsday
>Darkseid
And that's literally it. Superman literally shits on everyone else.
Weebshit tends to make overpowered characters like him but tend to make him likeable by making it clear they trained for their powers, but Superman didnt train, hes powerful because hes a bullshit plant man and photosynthesis makes him more powerful
Even fricking Thor has to be train to become stronger, Superman is just bullshit OP because he is
>le uncreative, thought-terminating-meme-spouting casual has arrived
Next, tell us how Batman isn't solving any real issues by punching criminals, and how he should instead donate some of his money.
...Wait, he already does that???
What the frick are you talking about? I'm saying Superman is boring because he oneshots 99% of his enemies and there's almost nobody in his own setting that is a meaningful threat to him
Batman can't oneshot the Joker and is physically inferior to a shit ton of his own villain's catalogue like Bane and Croc, and has actually trained for his strength unlike getting power from magic photosynthesis
>What the frick are you talking about?
You're a casual who spouts thought-terminating memes. You literally prove it in the next sentence:
>I'm saying Superman is boring because he oneshots 99% of his enemies and there's almost nobody in his own setting that is a meaningful threat to him
I also called you uncreative because you think the only story is one where Superman gets beaten down.
>Assuming people read older comics
That was your first mistake
>I'm saying Superman is boring because he oneshots 99% of his enemies and there's almost nobody in his own setting that is a meaningful threat to him
What are you talking about?
Superman gets his shit pushed in on a weekly basis by some random villain.
He is basically always jobbing its pretty funny
>Superman is boring because he oneshots 99% of his enemies and there's almost nobody in his own setting that is a meaningful threat to him
Superman is mid tier in DC
Byrne nerfing Superman Post-Crisis was a good decision for Superman stories but a bad decision for the DCU. It turns him into just another superhero instead of the strongest, (arguably) cleverest, first and best.
Byrne basically made Superman into the boring character that people call him today. Superman was popular in the sixties, when he was allowed to be a sci-fi character with wacky concepts.
Byrne didn't hurt Superman's brand. Singer did and Snyder was the coup de grace.
But he's fixed now.
>don't know how to draw two people kissing, especially the lips
>don't draw the lips at all
one job.
>Byrne basically made Superman into the boring character that people call him today.
Right, and he claims he "saved" the character when in fact Superman's popularity started to decline immediately after the retcon.
Too be fair by the mid 80s Superman needed some new energy . Curt Swan was still drawing him…and his “Alex Raymond” style wasn’t exactly hot with the kids at that point
I like Cary Bates/Eliot Maggin but they were on the character for years.
>Too be fair by the mid 80s Superman needed some new energy .
God I wish Steve Gerber had gotten the Superman books instead of Byrne. Reading his dark, crazy epic Phantom Zone mini makes you realize he could have updated all the crazy 60s shit and made it work in the modern era.
>read an interview with Gerber
>oh yeah I made a pitch for Superman post crisis
>can you share some of that
>I’d like to hold on to it..I might use it later for another story
>*dies a few years later*
WE WILL NEVER KNOW HIS PITCH NOW!!!! I get the reason behind not giving out all his story ideas but I’d love to see what his pitch was
>Superman
>fighting villains
Lol
Based
I've said it before, the only way to make Superman cool again is to throw out all the Byrne characterization and go back to Silver/Bronze-age style stories.
Then why don't you write Superman comics instead of complaining about how every writer sucks?
Because you're a radicalized piece of shit that doesn't actually care about the values Supes stands for and are just b***hing to whine because you lack anything greater in your life
>Supes stands for
Superman stands for homosexuality
Anon DC doesn't hate Superman. Editorial is just directionless and everyone is hurting right now
What's with this board's insistent need to shit on Superman daily? Is this a summergay thing or?
Mostly Batfans trying to look big, and summergays trying to sound tough and cool- and failing at both.
It's Superman. Peace and restraint are barely words to summergays who stop screaming at their playstations long enough to do some heavy reading by picking up a comic book. Superman doesn't reach people who tantrum like 2 year olds, but they buy the comic books anyway.
Hate? And what the frick do you like? You're on Cinemaphile, you frickers complain about everything, where's your room to talk? Dumb motherfricker, frick you.
