SS is just a way to sell the DC villains branding individually from their "main" brands, namely the heroes they come from, and mostly Harley and Joker.

Suicide Squad was a shocking success both in theatrical release, home video and especially merch. Harley merch especially sold fantastically well, particularly costumes, so they thought she had hit her stride.

Now, a smart businessman might suppose the massive number of couples on halloween and the fact the movie focused heavily on Harley and Joker being in a relationship might mean said angle of a Joker/Harley pair, one of whom being their most successful villain by fair, might mean that people greatly enjoyed them together and their weird broken dynamic. Instead some bozo decided Harley was the REAL powerhouse of the group and they needed to immediately push her forwards as the "Next Joker" because she was obviously so hugely popular. Enough so they spent 90 million dollars on her breakout movie and made her the headliner of a 180 million sequel to this very movie, both of which revolved around her getting over the Joker and being strong and independent. At the same time they greenlit a game focused around her and this squad.

And then, SOMEHOW, everything she's been in has bombed terribly while the one Joker movie they had no confidence in sold more than Batman. Anyhoo WB got sold off and now it's new owners are struggling with bomb after bomb because the people in charge are pretty fricking bad at this.

They do not. Or, at least, they sure as shit ain't paying for it. Free Guy made more than double The Suicide Squad and came out the same month. FREE GUY. Do you remember Free Guy? That original Ip? People wanted to see that, not so much Harley Gets Over Joker AGAIN

They shill Harley because people like her and she is genuinely popular. I think the Suicide Squad is just an extension of her at this point, and occasionally an attempt at emulating the Guardians of the Galaxy movie success.

Yes some prostitute cosplay's her online.

Harley will forever be coomer bait. It sure as he'll not because she can sell comics, movies or video games.

Not really. Harley's popularity peaked in 2016 and has been in a steep decline since then. I think the cartoon is the only Harley centric thing that actually did well in recent years. Her comics, movies, and now games are all doing poorly.

It's a great premise to get a bunch of maniacs to work together.

If you go back and read the old Suicide Squad comics, they're great. They feature a lot of good action and espionage. The new Suicide Squad is more or less a Harley Quinn and Friends book.

      Anonymous

They don't even really use that premise anymore. As you say it's not popular because of that great idea, it's just the Harley Quinn team book/movie now and that's the reason the Suicide Squad get shilled so hard.

Harley Quinn is the most popular and culturally relevant comic book character at the moment. Men think she's hot and women want to be her. I don't like it but that's how it is.

Indeed. Comic viewership ratings have plummeted ever since they started insulting their target audience. Now the only people left are those that would like feminist Harley Quinn over anybody else.

      >Harley Quinn is the most popular and culturally relevant comic book character at the moment.

She hasn't had a successful movie or series since before Trump was president. She wishes she was on Joker's level, nevermind an actually relevant winner like Spider-Man who just cannot seem to have a non-successful venture outside of the Mile Morales DLC-I mean, spin off. Even then the sequel to the Spider-Verse movie made almost 1/3rd of No Way Home, which is a frickton of money.

The first SS movie was one of their better performers, so they decided to push the brand. They really went all in on it by putting Gunn on the sequel, forcing Rocksteady to make a game, and getting the anime greenlit, but by the time the second movie came out and performed poorly they were already in too deep with the other projects.

Harley is still popular. Remember that cartoon when she farted and it was really stinky and it made Batman hold his nose?

Word-of-mouth helps sales and you won't stop talking about them. Maybe if there weren't multiple Suicide Squad threads up on Cinemaphile and Cinemaphile at any given point the shills paid to survey this place would tell their corporate masters to ease up a little.

Most people still see her as Joker's girlfriend. Even standalone stories that want to have her be on her own end up revolving around their break-up, making their relationship the whole focus still.

That's right, and she'll frick anybody. She has fricked everybody. Her teachers, Joker, Ivy, rando's, Nightwing, Batman is on the shortlist. Whomever, wherever, whatever and whenever the impulse strikes her.

There were 2 suicide squad properties past the first successful movie and both of them bombed horribly. On an unreleated note, the sequel did not feature Joker and the game did not advertise having Joker, while every other Arkham game that did was a massive success(Funny enough Origins didn't do so hot, and guess what was missing?)

Do with that information as you will.

Does the characters even need the same sex to be equivalents?
