Why does Hollywood keep trying over and over again to convince audiences that women are heckin badasses?

It doesn't work. Nobody believes women are badasses, not even feminists. Female-led action films are not successful. It's obviously not about the money. So what is it about?
Women have been iconic badasses in films for decades. see: Terminator series, Matrix, Alien 2, literally every Sigourney Weaver movie, every Mila Jovovich movie. The problem is not tough women, it is when they're getting petite anorexic zoomettes like Anya Taylor Joy and Janna Ortega as action stars.
Theron was a decent action star in the other Mad Max, Anya weighs 110 pounds and hasn't worked out a day in her life except to lift up shopping bags.
Weaver played a scared girl in Alien and Aliens that had a big freak out moment or two toward the end.

Anna Taylor Joy looks like more of an anime character in this movie then the live-action Battle Angel Alita.

They want the anime audience but they strip everything that men want to see: sex appeal, men and women appreciating how hot each other are, HUMOR and if it's a woman then she has to show enough skin and be vulnerable enough that the men in the audience would want to self insert at the love interest she SHOULD have who comes to her rescue and shit. This is just Girl Power horseshit. And feminism will ALWAYS repel men. You know what else repels men? Just hearing the WORD feminism associated with a film. That homosexual Miller didn't start stopping that word until after his movie was raking in the money as he was smug and assured then. Here he played his cards too early.

The issue is that "people" (you) are moronic and think that action movies have ever been in any way "believable." Nothing that Arnold or Stallone did was ever believable or realistic, but your brain is rotted so now it reads as believable when big muscly men do it but not when skinny women do it.
