The movie version IS the Katoki design. The previous one was him adapting the G Generation design.
He redesigned it for his FIX and Ka Signature toy lines that he fully supervised. The previous design is wholly his design

The Ex-S is loved by a ton of fans, they buy Master Grade kits of it and $200 Robot Damashii toys of it, so your whining that the Ex-S is over-designed just comes of as a bitter Katoki hater with moronic takes on mecha design.

ye going after Ex-S is silly as most of it's components are additional attachments and some are also intended to be jettisoned once it reaches combat like the massive fulltanks
the boosters are a universal attachment in sentinel so they need that size to fulfill all of it's functions
if you want to frick with S gundam go after it's funky pelvis and not it's super fast penetrate the combat zone because a gundam is literally soloing the entire federation expansion

I like the Xi and Penelope a lot.
What I don’t like is the Eclipse from SEED, which is obviously inspired more by the Hathaway Gundam’s and is out of place in its own universe.
It looks like the Gundam version of Starscream from Bayformers.
Genuinely one of my favorite Gundam designs. I love how its bulky but still highly maneuverable, a lot like The O (another one of my favourite designs).

I dunno why Sunrise considered Xi and Penelope to be "impossible" to hand-draw and have to use CG to adapt them when animators back in the 80's managed to draw Zeorymer just fine?

In the context of its universe, while it is big and bulky, it is one of the first two successful scaling down of the system that allowed battleships like the flying apartment block known as White Base to fly in earth's atmosphere. Using that system, the machine doesn't need to be aerodynamic to go airborne, and when it does need to go fast it has beam barrier generators (the effect from them is slightly visible in the movie) derived from tech we've seen on the earlier Nu Gundam to help with air resistance issues.

As a zoomer (23 y/o) - I really like the Hathaway designs. I am a fan of bulky and slim mechs. It is beautiful!

Honestly it's one of my favorite designs and the HG kit is a joy to build. It's not over designed but I can see why people think it is. The chicken looking Gundam is over designed and the kit isn't great. It can be fixed with magnets which is neat
I understand it's massive but I also want a MG kit with a wienerpit. I know it's possible to fit one into the HG kit but I don't own a resin printer and this thing was too pricey for me to take a cutter to it

Okay, set the boomer/zoomer stuff aside. Different people have different taste in mech design and that's been a cross-generational thing. No age group is a perfect monolith.
As for the Xi itself, its a design that definitely has to be allowed to grow on you. There is a level of beauty in that mess, but you have to get past the initial impression of it being a bloated mess. The recent HG model and the movie go a long way in showing how the machine can still have a decent range of motion despite its bulk.
In context of its series... its a slimmed down Penelope, so if someone thinks its overdesigned they haven't seen anything yet.
