I'm not being facetious or memeing here, but the muted color palette and general look of the JL cartoons is fricking horrendous. The Timm style was cool for BTAS, took a nosedive with TNBA, and then never recovered.

There are some interview quotes in this article where both Bruce and the executives at WB Kids take credit, but you know how entertainment is. That could just mean Timm requested it be made, it doesn't mean he drew them.

When the DCAU came out it was telling simplified, more marketable versions of the stories the comics had already told. Some of these changes were for the benefit of younger audiences and thus the writing quality resulted in unfavorable differences in the execution of some stories. Hence why the comics were better. That and a better use of artwork and visuals.
Now? Sure. When the DCAU was coming out and the decade or so after? Comics were vastly better.

As a result, fans also realize that the bulk of whatever series wasn't very good either, they just thought it was.
