I assume the writer was virtue signaling because some other shithead on Twitter that week said Tolkien was racist
The people who made that claim only have seen the Peter Jackson movies
Eh sometimes you can just dislike a classic. I read all of Journey to the West and loved it. Tried Romance of the Three Kingdoms being told it was just as good and a "defacto classic" and IMO it chodes dick and a seven year old could write better paragraphs. I know its partially a translation thing, but there is zero reason every other paragraphs have 5-7 people subjects and 4 locations.
>X, Y and Z went to 1 to meet with A who was landowner of 2, and brother of B. They appointed Y and Z to guard captain and replaced C lord of 3. They pushed hard into 2 beating back D. However, in a flurry of blows Z was slain in front of Y.
Literally every other paragraph.
You are probably right though and its some modern comic writer PC reason.
>science guy hates fantasy
One of the supervillains in the setting is a huge LotR nerd
Tony's an Arthurian snob.
Cap is canonically a fan
Fantasy, he's a sci fi guy
Tolkien made more than LotR. And it all sucked except for the Silmarillion.
And the Silmarillion kinda goes to shit after Unnumbered Tears.
It's just the trope of scientist guy hates magic and mythology. Reed is this way at times as well. I liked Bendis' idea of Tony pursuing magic. Maybe at some point he could make a suit that assists with magic like Dr Doom. The Midnight Suns game has Tony express an interest in learning about magic to deal with the crazy shit around him.
>scientist guy hates magic and mythology
how does that make sense when fricking Thor is his team
Scientists want everything to be empirically understandable and reproducible, which usually goes against the nature of magic
Also to him, Thor might as well be a sufficiently advanced alien
>how does that make sense when fricking Thor is his team
Thor isn't that big of an issue because he rarely does anything magical and 99% of the time is just a strong guy with a hammer, a better example would be guys like Dr. Strange, Doom, Loki and other folks who actively use magic and who Tony constantly works with/against.
>he doesn't know
I have a vague feeling Tony might elaborate on his Tolkien hate on an uncopped version of this page
Nevermind he doesn't say shit, you can keep speculating
>Sees graffiti that looks like Theban
>Blames Tolkien
What did he mean by this?
Gee why would the weapon mongering industrialist hate the books critiquing war mongering industrialism
This. Tony is basically the Saruman of his world, of course he doesn't like Lotr.
Doom would likely like Sauron. He's canonically a Star Trek fan though.
