It's a show about middle-aged prostitutes. And it's one of those shows that tries to convince you the characters aren't rich even though they would have to be rich to afford the apartments they live in.

Correct. Friends is probably the prime example. It's understandable that they need big sets to film in, but it's always laughable when they try to pretend the apartments on the show wouldn't be incredibly expensive.

Chandler and Ross have well paying jobs, and Monica's apartment is rent controlled because of her dead grandmother.

That's pretty much it. Especially considering their jobs. Carrie did fashion writing for several huge magazines so she made good money, Miranda was a Harvard law grad which means she prob worked for a big respectable firm so she was well off and Charlotte was an art dealer in fricking Manhattan so she probably made bank. The only questionable one was Samantha who did PR so she either made a lot or not much.
Yet the show constantly tried to convince you none of them had money. Yes I know too god damn much about this show. I have three sisters + a girl I dated for a few years loved it.

Carrie is supposed to be "broke" ie just long running credit card debit. Carrie literally writes one weekly article for the equivalent of the NY Post. Her job at Vogue in the later seasons is when she needs extra money because her chad ex-boyfriend is about to evict her. She does sell a book which becomes a hit in Paris.

2. The movies (mostly the 2nd one but the 1st one's not great either) were so bad that they retroactively made the show irrelevant.

The ending of the show really made me laugh, some Hallmark card bull about loving yourself
