He ends up on a quest to complete a series of tasks. With the completion of each task, the witch gifts him artifacts that slowly helps him lose his merman form. Eventually becoming human after his quest is complete.
But as soon as he's ready to be reunited with his beloved, the witch reveals that the tasks he performed have granted her strength to overpower his father and take over merpeople kingdom. Realizing the enormity of his crimes, Male Ariel says farewell to his princess before destroying the witch's gifts and transforming back into a merman.
He rushes back just in time to save his father and his kingdom from the empowered giant witch. Even though he saved the merpeople, he still must be trialed for aiding the witch in the first place. King Triton decides that the suitable 'punishment' would be exile into the human world where he can be with the princess.
