Why don't erotic comics sell in the US?

The erotic comic market is huge in Japan and France.

There's nowhere to sell them, and if you're buying porn anyway then companies are more interested in selling you a 4K hour long porno video for $80.

the US was founded by puritans who were so stuck up that even 17th century england didn't want them, and their sentiments and values can still be felt in modern society

and I don't mean Puritans in the colloquial term, I mean the Calvinist religious movement from which the colloquial term is derived

I'm enough of a coomer to have read my fair share of smut comics, and I gotta say, they are never worth paying for. the story is never any good, the art is always just OK, the characters are never interesting, and the humor is always Boomer tier. The only smut i'd ever pay for is the Druuna series and only if there were a really good English translation.

Maybe that works for you, but for Erotica to sell when there's no widespread ban on the shit, it has to stand on SOME kind of artistic merit. Euro stuff can go for a fun, lighthearted approach like pic related which is more of a tease at MOST, or it can go for off the wall shit like Druuna or the other stories in Heavy Metal. Japan has frickloads of eager artists willing to get their work out there and they AGRRESSIVELY cater to fetishes. The American attitude towards smut is that sex in and of itself is enough to sell without any other real merits. Which is only sort of true. Sex still has to compete with sex.

like said, 90% of pronos are shit and are only "good" enough for a quick jerkoff session before doing something else.

Credit card frickery means that they can't retail them. The actual biz model is Patreon and the like. See Tracy Scoopes.

If the big 2 collapse, this might be the future for comics.

Like, physical comics? People go to jail for selling that shit here. It's stupid but there's precedent for it.

They are not sold in most comic shops or online retailers. People invented paetreon and adult star mostly as a means of paying these artists back for pirating their shit. You cannot convince otherwise.

Well, as far as furry smut went, most of it was sold as 'zines and shipped by mail in plain brown wrappers until the Internet came along. Then they all became webcomics until the Web porn police started cracking down on them.

They have them though. In the thousands of boxes they have hidden away in the basement, there are hundreds of porn comics just scattered throughout

Japan and France are more typical countries. Their cultures evoke normal feelings of all avenues of humanity, including the curiosity and excitement over sex. However, America was founded by religious zealots such as the Puritans who shunned sex or anything fun, really. Life is to be composed of toil and faith, nothing more. The Shakers completely threw off all culture and sex, leading to their depressingly bleak church decor and total church membership of four people, because they don’t reproduce. Americans as a result hate sex and true culture and only approve of shallow black-and-white, sexless stories. Erotic comics would never fly here.

The USA pioneered the pornography industry and profits massively from it and porn is so successful and prevelant that the idea of not watching it for an entire month is considered a near impossible challenge by the average American. You are living in an alternate reality.

Eurotrash live in this bizzare fantasy where the US is simultaneously a far right fascist puritanical racist hypercapitalist dystopia, and a far left rainbow Bolshevik hypersexual degenerate Black person-worshipping communist failed state. It's the result of older generations of Euros all being card-carrying marxists raised on cold war-era anti-american propaganda, and younger generations of Euros all being internet-addicted larping neonazi contrarians. They don't know what the US is, they just project onto the US whatever is the opposite of their current beliefs are. It's best to just not acknowledge their gibberish.

Regular comics don't sell, what makes you think porn comics would do any better?

Anyway, the short answer is the moral lobby would screech about peddling porn to kids because comics are for children in their minds, now and forever.

Americans pirate everything. Japanese and French actually *buy* comics, even physical comics, to a much greater degree so they are able to support an industry for erotic comics.

    >comics are for children
This is why. There was a big underground comic scene in the 70s-90s that had some risque topics and art, but the big publishers wouldn't touch them because they wanted to maintain their squeaky clean brand image of capeshit for all ages. Even upstarts like Dark Horse mostly just focused on edgier capeshit because of the fear that sensuality wouldn't sell.
