There's no fricking way MJ legally got a permit for a gun in NYC, let alone concealed carry. She crossed state lines to get that gun. That alone is several years in jail. If she had actually managed to injure the Green Goblin she'd be opening herself up for several civil and federal lawsuits.

Marvel's NYC is the worst place in the world to live if you don't have super powers.

Where the frick did people get the idea that guns are illegal in NYC? The laws there are just more restrictive.

Why get the attention of the guy who the police are shooting to no effect that is firing death beams?

It depends, villains like Goblin aren't bulletproof, dumping a full rifle magazine into his head will definitely kill him if the first bullet somehow didn't splatter it like a watermelon, but that would be a very bad idea against Living Laser.

Because it's a major cope for "muh guns" civvies to believe they're gonna go Terminator mode and take out a threat, when most likely they will go into fight or flight and panic.

Reality: Cops go through intensive training to stay calm under pressure and pick their targets. See those pop ups where there are bad guys and innocents etc. They have to train hard for this.

Karen the soccer mom is going to be panicking and just shoot the first person who startles her in an active shooter situation for example.

They are, only because the armed police in other relevant countries are SWAT teams... All emergency services personnel should be allowed to conceal carry. However bad a US cop is, a civ is going to be even worse.

Guns in homes, that is more reasonable in America, as many burglars are armed.

Do you know how long a "cop" goes to school and training here in Burgerland? A Barber has more time and training than a cop does. Lets look at fire rescue.

Fire rescue has a low passing rate on the physical exam. You have to be really dumb to pass the written. For police? I've seen fat fricks pass the physical with no issues. There is a reason the military laugh at police and their training. Both the physical and the de-escalation training.

There are on average like 1,300 defensive gun use deaths each year in the US. Many mass shooting have been stopped by armed civilians and over 200,000 rapes are stopped each year by armed women.
People who say situations are just going to get worse by civilians with guns are provably wrong. We have thousands of case studies that say otherwise.

1,000 defensive shootings out of 45,000 offensive shootings (and a lot of suicides and accidents in that number) isn't a great argument. The fewer guns around, the safer everyone is. But, you know, it's America. There's no hope.

The vast majority of rapes ARE by someone the victim knows and trusts, The idea that a woman being jumped on a side street will be able to draw and fire before being overpowered is an obvious fantasy. Hardly ever happens.

              Anonymous

The idea is that IF she manages to run, she can get enough distance to draw and then use the gun if she get cornered or chased down. Just because something won't work in 100% of scenarios doesn't mean its useless.

                Anonymous

Hardly ever happens, so rare it's a dismal argument against reasonable gun control. It certainly doesn't happen thousands of times a year like someone in this thread claimed. But thousands of times a year, little kids get hold of a loaded gun their idiot parent left loaded and available and the Medical Examiner has to be called.

Because if a civilian is just hiding, or even a bystander, a supervillain could ignore them, because most villains don't kill civilians just for the hell of it. Sure, very few villains WON'T kill civilians, but most have higher priorities. Two Face has better shit to do than kill that guy cowering in the corner, he's gotta make sure he takes all the $2 bills in the second national bank of Gotham. But if you pull out a piece and actually get in the way? Suddenly you go from an NPC in the background to an active nuisance.
As for the villains who do want to kill everyone? Well, unless you can get a killshot, you suddenly alerted the supervillain where you are.

Unless you practice an enormous amount of times on a regular basis, you're just as likely to hit someone else. And that's if you were standing there calmly. In an agitated situation against a moving target, everyone in the area is at risk.

      Anonymous

Most people can land a hit on a person-sized target at the ranges in which most CC incidents take place. You're talking about accuracy under stress, which is uniformly terrible for everyone - even people who have been specifically trained to mitigate it. The police, even SWAT, have a massive issue with shooting bystanders and hostages. Supervillains would probably decrease the chances of someone missing their target, under stress the mind tends to hyperfocus and lose situational awareness, so a garishly dressed guy making a bold declarative statement would naturally draw all attention.

        Anonymous

Yes, you clarified that well. Real life isn't like a Clint Eastwood movie and bystanders getting shot by police unfortunately prove it. Although I imagine someone dressed in a purple and green costume would be easier to focus on than a regular person would be.

It's just a problem in all media where "If you're not the main character, you might as well be carrying a nerf gun" You could have a 20-man black ops squad with guns trained on the villain, and their IQ drops by a 100 points the instant any character with a name is on screen

      Anonymous

I'd say the unrealistic part is that the main character hits whatever he aims at and never kills a ten year old girl across the street by mistake. Movie heroes have accuracy with handguns that's a super-power all its own.
